Surprise: Andy Grammar Thinks Women are Objects “Honey I’m Good” is anything but that. In a country where the radio—as well as every other media outlet—is dominated by the misogynistic ideologies that go along with living in a patriarchal society, this song is just yet another in a long list about how women aren’t people, but objects created for the entertainment and pleasure of men. It wouldn’t be quite as terrible if the song had been a flop—except for that it’s the opposite of that—or if it wasn’t quite so catchy. It’s possible that I’m exaggerating or perhaps that, because I work in retail or commute a total of three hours on the days that I attend classes, I just have more opportunity (and greater misfortune) to catch this song each time it plays, but I don’t think that’s the case. The song seems to be fun and upbeat on the surface and, when paired with its spectacular ability to get stuck in your head for hours, poses yet another problem with the society we live in.
Right away Grammar is turning women into objects—they are just a pair of long legs meant to tantalize him and play the part of the temptress, leading the faithful hero astray on his path of righteousness. He does not identify where he is or what his intentions are for being there, but because of this line and one previous where he references “having another” it is safe to assume the implied setting is a bar or some sort of other gathering with alcohol. This being said, it is possible that the audience is supposed to assume he has consumed alcohol (further implied by the line “drinking from that unholy grail”) and it is beginning to impair his judgement and thus sympathize with him for being tempted by this unidentified woman, despite clearly having “somebody at home” he is supposed to “stay true”
