Everybody knows that a broken heart comes from unfaithfulness and it is something that can sometimes not be recovered in a whole lifetime, that is why he "spent his whole life trying to forget."
This is for all of those who are still confused about how they died. This means that he drank a lot because he thought that with the drinking his pain of what had happened, would stop with alcohol.
