Honor Code

College Honor Code Throughout your entire life you are taught from infancy and adolescence what is right from what is wrong. Once you enter the school system, even in the first years of pre-kindergarten, we are all informed that honesty is a key virtue in your education and in your life overall. The character trait of honesty is religiously enforced from your first day of elementary school until your last day of high school, which leaves us to no surprise that colleges take the honesty of each student just as serious. Colleges such as Georgia Military College, Georgia Southern University, and the University of Alabama are a few colleges that distribute amongst their student body and faculty an "Honor Code." An Honor Code is a statement of honor to represent the college, faculty/staff, and the student body as a respectable and honest place of higher education. The Honor Code is to disengage in dishonesty and to make sure that everyone inside the school is bettering their education as well as bettering the representation of the entire college. On behalf of Georgia Military College, "I will neither lie, cheat, steal, nor tolerate those who do," is the statement presented to verify the honor code they stand by. As a student at Georgia Military College this holds great importance to me and helps me realize how important it is to stay honest to yourself as well as your entire school/student body when furthering your education. If failure to abide by GMC's Honor Code, there are a list of actions that can be taken to punish whoever shall not follow this code. From certain restrictions and disciplinary probation all the way to disciplinary suspension or explosion, GMC has the authority to act to whoever shall break this code. Since Georgia Military College has this code and enforces every individual who walks on campus to apply it, I feel as if my education is taken seriously and that no one will get a "free ride" to a degree, and a degree will not be earned unless it is just that; earned. Further knowledge on the honor code system amongst various colleges leads us to broader and vast schools such as Georgia Southern University and the University of Alabama. Georgia Southern University's honor code states, "I will be academically honest in all of my course work and will not tolerate the academic dishonesty of others," while the University of Alabama states, "I promise or affirm that I will not at any time be involved with cheating, plagiarism, fabrication, or misrepresentation while enrolled as a student at The University of Alabama." Both of these universities distribute the same moral factors as GMC which allows us to see that honesty is taken to very high extremes in furthering your education. Also in comparison to Georgia Military College, both the University of Alabama and Georgia Southern University seek out relatively the same force of action to their student body and apply different methods of penalization to different acts of dishonesty. Representing the Honor Code of my college is very important to me because my education is important to me. Living day by day by the statement "I will neither lie, cheat, steal, nor tolerate those who do," will not only benefit my educational experience here at Georgia Military College but better my overall life as well. I believe it is necessary for each educational facility to have an academic honor code so that it is a reliable statement to fall back on so that students or others to do not cross any lines regarding honesty and integrity that may belittle themselves or the school. Traits that we were taught from childhood are still of importance to live by today to make yourself an overall better human being. I take this honor code seriously because I like to earn what is mine and I would not appreciate it if someone or myself were given an upper hand by cheating, lying, or stealing my way to success. All in all, an honor code system benefits both the school as well as each individual associated with the system. Enforcing honesty throughout your life will empower you to be not only a better college student, but a better person. From childhood to graduate school, honesty is a key factor in success and everyone who wants to better themselves should empower themselves and others to be honest and to do what is right.
