Honors Leadership Program Essay
One of the requirements of being in the Honors Leadership Program (HLP) is that first-year students live in the HLP Living Learning Community (LLC). When I found this out, I was excited as I would be able to live and develop relationships with students who were driven and striving to reach the same goal. I also did not have worry about what dorm I would live in, and I was quite happy to have that stress taken away. Now, all I had to do was find a roommate.
Fast forward three months and move in day was upon us. I was excited to get to see all the friends I had made at Ignite and to get to move in to a beautiful dorm. I could not wait to see what it was going to be like! For that same reason, I was nervous as I worried about what it would be like. I had no idea. Five hours in and my room is set up; I already love my roommate and there are people hanging out in the

First of all, it is fun. Oh so much fun! From game nights, to late night cookie runs and heart to heart chats, life in an LLC is always an adventure. Second, it is encouraging. These people have become my family. They support me when I’m down, rejoice with me when I’m excited, and are always there for me. We are all in the same boat, and we are all there for each other. Third, it is helpful. If you ever need help with homework, there is someone that can help you no matter the subject: Spanish, calculus, physics, pretty much anything. Living in an LLC has changed my UTK experience in the best ways possible.
When you walk on to campus as a freshman it can quickly become overwhelming as you think, “How in the world am I supposed to find my place in this massive place?” Because of the HLP, the LLC, and the friends I have made through them, I found that my place was waiting on me. I had instant friends, and we quickly discovered all the amazing opportunities available to us. Living in an LLC smoothed my transition as a new UTK student. It made it easy, and it felt

Being a member in National Honor Society implies that you are a person of great character. One of the most important qualities that you can possess is leadership. Honesty is one of the key factors to being a good leader. You must be honest towards everyone, and in everything that you do. If a leader wasn't honest, then no one would trust them. And if they weren't trustworthy then who would want to follow their lead? Leadership also requires that you have an optimistic attitude about everything. You have to take control, and look for the best in every situation. No one wants to follow someone who is always in a bad mood, and always looks for something to complain about.…

In the wake of numerous cheating scandals, such as those at the University of Virginia and Harvard, many people have began to question the effectiveness of honor codes (sources C, D). Honor codes can be defined as a set of rules implemented in a school that are based around morals that define both acceptable and unacceptable behaviors. While many feel as though such guidelines are necessary in maintaining a schools’ dignity, others believe that honor codes are impossible to enforce. Honor codes should not be enforced because they are too harsh, unrealistic, and put innocent students in uncomfortable social situations.…

The four pillars of National Honors Society, scholarship, service, leadership, and character, have paved a path for me as a student and as a person. Scholarship has taught me to strive to be the best student I can be. I use scholarship to keep up with my school work and never give up when a class is hard. I always strive for the best grade I can get and I will stop at nothing until I reach my goal. I will continue to use scholarship as I go to college and pursue my dream as a pediatric dentist. I will study, I will learn, and I will never give up no matter what happens along the way. I use service when I volunteered to help my local private school. I was never asked to do so, but I felt as if I was giving back to a school that had done so much…

Military leadership isn’t simply about leading a group of individuals to accomplish the mission. On the surface it may seem this way; a barrage of loud, authoritative orders being barked out to brainwashed enlistees. This is how the preponderance of the masses that aren’t associated with the military may see us. However, it’s much, much more than that. Military leadership is about leading individuals to become something more than they ever thought they could be. To develop an individual into one of integrity and excellence. To help them reach goals they never thought possible and to consider a world beyond their own. Truly, there is no other form of leadership quite like it.…

This approach to leadership is quite interesting and has influenced me because in the latter part of my career in the Navy, I see this type of leadership style more and more. Many people may think of the military being as part of a big team; and they are correct in many cases, but there is a lot of individualism as well. It was not until technology and increased tracking of policies and programs that I started to notice and be a part of project management, task force, and improvement teams. This was not commonplace in probably the first half of my career. Northouse (2012) emphasized additional types; “Examples of such teams include project management teams, task forces, work units, standing committees, quality teams, and…
