Stephen King is not any ordinary author. He is pretty much known as one of the most successful writers in the genre of horror fiction. King has been praised for his characterization, his settings and most of all his genius to combine science fiction, fantasy and horror fiction. Stephen Edwin King was born on September 21, 1947, in Portland, Maine. His parents were Donald and Nellie Ruth Pillsbury King. King also had an adopted older brother named David. His father Donald was born in 1913, in Peru, Indiana. He was a merchant sailor. Nellie, King’s mother, was born on March 13, 1913, in Scarborough, Maine. King lived a tough childhood. His father left him when he was two years old, saying, “going to buy a pack of cigarettes”. He left his wife Nellie to raise Stephen and his older brother David, by herself. His family was forced to move to many places like, Wisconsin, Indiana and Connecticut. At the age of eleven King moved back to Maine (Werlock, Stephen King). King attended Durham Elementary School and graduated from Lisbon Falls High School. He later earned a bachelor’s degree at the University of Maine in 1970. King married a woman by the name of Tabitha Jane Spruce on January 2, 1971. After two years of teaching, King decided to write a story called “Carrie”(Safra, Stephen King). Stephen King first started writing in January of 1959. Stephen and his older brother David decided to write their own local newspaper called, “Dave’s Rag”. They sold each paper for five cents and made a small business out of it (Bloom, Stephen King). When King attended Lisbon High School, he and his best friend, Chris Chesley, put together their own 18 short stories called “People, Places, and Things- Volume 1. His first actual published writing was called “I Was a Teenage Grave Robber”, in 1965. He first started making some money with his story called “The Glass Floor”.
