Supplies
We used the horror movie “Devil” as the fear stimulus in our experiment. The movie was played on a 13.3 inch laptop. Oxygen saturation and pulse were measured using a Walgreens Pharmacy brand pulse oximeter. The experiment was completed in a closed door prayer room in the Student Center. The lights were shut off and a phone flashlight was the only light source in the room, used to record information.
Subjects
For this experiment we chose two female college students. Female subjects were chosen due to their response to the question “Do you get scared during horror movies?” Female subject A is 20 years of age. The subjects pulse and saturation O2 was measure with the subjects sitting down with the pulse oximeter on their pointer finger and their hand was sitting on the ground. The pulse oximeter measure subject A’s vitals than was passed to subject B. The pulse oximeter was left on the subjects’ finger until reading became steady, usually about 5-15 seconds. The baseline was taken before the movie started with the lights off just as the setting was for other readings. A second reading was taken during the previews when two hands were shown. The third reading was taken at the start off the movie. This reading was taken just after a piece of glass fell onto the street in the movie. A fourth reading was measured after the elevator fell with all the characters in it. Our fifth reading was taken after the first character died. We measured a sixth reading after elderly women was found hanging in the elevator. Our seventh measurement was taken during sparking of electrical cable in wet basement. After the security guard in the elevator was killed an eighth measurement was taken. Our ninth measurement with the pulse oximeter was taken when the devil appeared in behind last surviving character. The tenth reading was taken when the movie was winding down the story. Than our last measurement was taken after the movie was
