Since Christianity has been established as the official religion of the Greek state there have been distinctions between the State, the Church and of course the Monasteries (Troianos and Poulis 2002, 60-68, 79-81 and 109-119; Venizelos 2000, 55-61, 76-84 and 91-93; Stathopoulos 2000, 59-70; on the side of the Church: Ramiotis 1997, 80 and 89-92; Apostolakis 2002, 9-12 and 17-22; Apostolakis 2003, 11-18 and 23-32). Especially, when it is about issues that concern the management of the Monastery, monks are obliged to be obedient to what the Metropolis and the laws of Greece say . Otherwise everything might be different; private companies could take responsibility for the Monastery’s management. This could be financially beneficial for the Monastery’s sustainability for instance. I will refer to this part in more detail in the fifth chapter.
3. 4. Why is Hosios Loukas Monastery a “living heritage” site?
The term “living heritage site” has not just one simple definition; it has multiple definitions:

Of course this definition makes a clear distinction between the local community and the national or international communities that use or visit the site or make a profit from it.
