1.1. Sustainability
In recent years, environment friendly, “going green” has affected many hotels in the way they are designed, built or refurbished and operated. The market of environmentally concerned consumers is growing and it is important to cater to their needs. (Kapiki, 2012) In addition, going green is seen as means of giving back to the community and environment as well as reducing operational cost. For example, 59% of respondents from a survey, by Timetric Travel & Tourism Reports, states that companies that operate in the Asia-Pacific expect to save 5-10% of their expenditure. (Hospitalities News, 2013)
For example Habitat Suites in Texas has the motto of “Environmental Consciousness in action”. The hotel is practically free of toxic cleaning agent, chemical or pesticides. Furthermore, the hotel has one of the best solar system which reduces energy consumption. It also has its own organic fruit and vegetable garden which reduces carbon footprint. (ROTH, 2009) Locally in Singapore, many hotels had started on the going green initiative. One example is Four Season Hotel Singapore, where guest have the option of not changing their bed sheets simply by putting the “bean bag” on the bed for indication.
1.2. Health & Wellness
With great emphasis being placed on health and fitness, many consumers are health conscious and workout more these days. Many hotels are investing and expanding their spa department, hiring health experts and designing in-room fitness equipments. (Fraser, 2012) Hotels are also considering in room workout, with rooms being bigger and spacious, for guest who prefer privacy. A report by Timetric Travel & Tourism Reports shows 65% of luxury hotels as well as 32% of other hotels expects health and wellness tourist to increase in 2013. Changes such as healthier menus are being put in place. (Hospitalities News, 2013)
