Hosted E-Commerce Shopping Cart on the Amazon Webstore
Hosted e-commerce shopping cart on the Amazon Webstore

1. Briefly, what is this and what does it do?
2. What kind of costs can your client expect (before your design or consulting fees)?
3. What are the first steps your client needs to take to get started?

I chose to write about the hosted e-commerce shopping cart that is offered by Shopify. This is a way to sell your products online by accepting credit cards. With Shopify you get an e-commerce web site that they host for you. You can make your e-commerce web site by using there templates or you can have a web designer use HTML and CSS for a custom looking web site. You have full control offer your web site and can even sell digital downloads. With Shopify you can let your customers pay with a credit card or use PayPal. They even provide mobile e-commerce features that include an iPhone app with a mobile storefront. If you already have a web site you use Shopify with it. My client can expect to pay at least $29 a month for the basic service with a limit of 100 products; $59 a month for the professional service with a limit of 2,500 products; or $179 a month for their unlimited service. To get started my client can get a 14 day trial at www.shopify.com by entering in their desired store name, their email, and create a password. After the 14 day trial my client will have to choose one of the above services and start paying by the month. I would highly recommend Shopify to my clients as an e-commerce solution.

The first key to starting a successful online business is to first understand ecommerce and how it operates. Most people understand that ecommerce or electronic commerce refers to the buying and selling of products or services over electronic systems such as the Internet and other computer networks. However, it stretches beyond just the buying and selling of goods; it also includes an online process of developing, marketing, selling, delivering, servicing and paying for products and services. “The use of commerce is conducted in this way, spurring and drawing on innovations in electronic funds transfer, supply chain management, internet marketing, online transaction processing, electronic data interchange (EDI), inventory management systems, and automated data collection systems. Modern electronic commerce typically uses the World Wide Web at least at one point in the transaction 's life-cycle, although it may encompass a wider range of technologies such as e-mail, mobile devices and telephones as well”. (Electronic Commerce, modified November 2011, Wikipedia). Today it is said to be over 29.7 billion pages on the World Wide Web. Ecommerce today has gained so much popularity because its core technologies are constantly evolving and keeping up with a technology based world. Each year the number of ecommerce deals grows tremendously. The sales volumes of on-line stores run in a more than comparable race with physical retail stores.…

This is very important for Crystal Lake Thriftway as this is an entirely new program for this store. It seems best for the store owner to tryShopify.com and to allow the website to be “designed” this way until employees and customers are familiar with the new shopping process. It allows for customers to feel secure in their online payment transactions. Shopify also offers a design “expert” in the event that the store owner and management need assistance in designing the website when linking it to their existing advertising website (Shopify.com, 2013). The prices range from a “starter” website at a cost of $14 per month to a “professional” website at $179 per month. There are no setup fees; there are no contracts; the store can use their own domain name; and the website can be cancelled at any time (Shopify.com, 2013). Finally, Shopify even offers apps at various prices to tie in with the store’s website and marketing (Shopify.com, 2013). This will enable Crystal Lake Thriftway to tie the app directly to the website to give customers…

    Ecommerce: Shopping Cart

A shopping cart is a piece of software that acts as an online store 's catalog and ordering process. Typically, a shopping cart is the interface between a company 's website and its deeper infrastructure. Contrary to popular belief among merchants, an online shopping cart does not process credit card payments (Parker, 2010). Instead, shopping cart software serves three other main purposes. First, it allows merchants to setup and manage online sales processes such as adding products, inventory management, order fulfillment and customer data collection (Parker, 2010). Second, it acts as the ordering interface for the customer allowing him/her to add/remove products from the shopping cart and checkout (Parker, 2010). And lastly, it communicates the payment information to the payment gateway which encrypts the data and sends it to the banks for authorization (Parker, 2010). Shopping carts come in two forms: 1) Self Hosted Software – This type of shopping cart is a dedicated piece of software that is hosted on the retailer’s own server (Parker, 2010). There are several varieties of licensed carts that range from open source free carts to proprietary packages that can cost thousands of dollars (Parker, 2010). Merchants who choose to host their own shopping carts are also responsible for securing their server and software against data theft which is a costly ongoing task (Parker, 2010). Generally, self hosted shopping carts are only advisable for mid-to-large online retailers that have someone dedicated to maintaining the security of the website (Parker, 2010). 2) 3rd Party Hosted Software – Also known as an Application Service Provider (ASP), this type is shopping cart is hosted on the ASP’s secured servers and integrated with the retailers website using code snippets, JavaScript and/or API connections (Parker, 2010). Generally, 3rd party hosted shopping cart…
