Subject: Migrant Hostel is a poem composed by Peter Skrzynecki. It is a moving account of the experiences of migrants living in an overly-crowded lodge. The first stanza captures the temporary nature of the immigrants stay at the hostel; “comings and goings”, “arrivals of newcomers” and “sudden departures”. The second stanza goes on to express the cultural divisions existing within the hostel; “nationalities sought”. The next stanza reminds the responder of the seasonal, short time spent in the hostel and the boredom, tedium and uncertainty which results. The final stanza concludes the poem by creating a strong sense of oppression, explaining that the hostel controlled the migrants’ every action. Overall, Skrzynecki…

Belonging is usually defined as being accepted into and by members of a family, group, class, race, community or school. The term belonging means something different to everyone but most people will come up with the words acceptance, security and identity. In this speech I have chosen to talk about the aspects of belonging and not belonging in two of Peter Skrzynecki’s Poems, Migrant Hostel and 10 Mary Street and also in the 1997 film ‘Titanic’.…

Peter Skryznecki’s poetic text explores the timeless concept of belonging in the mid 20th century. In the opening stanza, through the use of sibilance, the gentle‘s’ sound in “the comings and goings – Arrivals of newcomers In busloads from the station” creates a feeling of movement and change, as these migrants have arrived in Australia; a bustling city. Through this, Skrzynecki shows that these migrants, though they may be disorientated by their new surroundings, are moving as a group, suggesting their inclusion of other migrants and movement to seek refuge. Another aural technique is used within the first stanza, that is, alliteration. The soft letter ‘w’ within “wondering who would be coming next” conveys the migrants’ tone of hopelessness and evokes emotion within the audience and so vividly displays the loneliness of the migrants as well as their lack of understanding in such a new environment.…

Even though there are many advantage there are also many disadvantages. The biggest disadvantage is that when you take a plea bargain it is an automatic admission of guilt. You waive your right to have your trial heard by a jury and a judge. And, even though a plea bargain was offered and accepted, the court can decline the plea bargain which would put the case back on the docket to be heard by a jury. So an admission of guilt not only stays with you forever, it also takes away the right to file for an appeal in your…

The migrants which the poet depicts are those after WWII who were invited by the Australian Government to seek refuge in the provided migrant hostels. The poem has a sense of bitterness where the migrants have been taken out of their homeland and placed into an area isolated from the rest of the Australian society. The concept of belonging and not belonging are explored in this poem where the poem is able to relate his experience and put them into either one.…

‘An individual’s interaction with others and the world around them can limit or enrich their experience of belonging.’ Belonging is central to how we define ourselves: our belonging to or connection emerges from interaction with people and places. Belonging is a distinct identity characterised by affiliation, acceptance and association. Belonging is shaped by personal, cultural, historical and social contexts. By increasing their understanding of themselves and the world around them they can limit or enrich their experience of belonging. These judgements are epitomised in Peter Skrzynecki’s Immigrant Chronicle’s, a collection of poems that consists of 10 Mary Street and Migrant Hostel, which detail the migrant experience and the barriers which…

The author Masashi Kishimoto once penned 'the day peace comes is the day people understand one another'. It is through this understanding of each other that people are accepted and can belong to each other. This notion of belonging is made evident in Peter Skrzynecki's poem “Migrant Hostel” where immigrants are distanced and isolated due to a lack of connection. In contrast, Skrzynecki's poem “Feliks Skrzynecki” demonstrates one's ability to flourish by belonging to one's self. However, Tim Winton's short story “Neighbours” demonstrates the eventual nourishing feeling of acceptance that can develop from people's acceptance of one another. Steven Spielburg's film “The Terminal”…

The image of God can be interpreted many ways. Most envision Him as a Father Time figure that sits on a cloud thumbing his long, silver beard. Some view God as an uncompromising demiurge, while others choose to believe He is a loving deity with bountiful grace. While some consider the Holy Trinity one being, others believe it to be three separate entities. William P. Young, in his fictional novel, The Shack, takes a very different approach on his view of God. The author personifies the Holy Trinity in terms that very few have ever considered. In the formative years of William P. Young’s life, significant events occurred that shaped his presentation of God. The images portrayed in his book conflict with the belief of many Christians today.…
