Hot stone massage is a specialty massage where the therapist uses smooth, heated stones on the body. The heat can be relaxing and can warm up tight muscles for a more thorough massage. The therapist may use the stones as a way to massage deeper. Hot stone massage originated from the Chinese more than two thousand years ago. They used hot stones as a mean of improving the function of internal organs. These stones were also used for healing the body in North and South America, Africa, Europe, Egypt, and Asia. Some traditions these countries created were laying stones in patterns on the body, carrying or wearing stones for health and protection, and ceremonial uses.
