Hotel Rwanda
Hotel Rwanda “Hotel Rwanda” was directed by Terry George and produced by Sam Bhembe and Roberto Cicutto. It was released into the United States on December 22, 2004, but it released elsewhere in the world throughout 2005. The three main stars of the movie were Don Cheadle, who plays Paul Rusesabagina the hotel manager, Sophie Okonedo, who plays Tatiana Rusesabagina, Paul’s wife, and Nick Nolte who plays Colonel Oliver, the United Nations peacekeeper. I watched this movie about a week ago on July 27th with a few of my friends who are also taking this course. The movie is not part of a series, but it is based on a true story. It is inspired by the novel An Ordinary Man by Paul Rusesabagina and Hotel Rwanda: Bringing the True Story of an African Hero to Film by Keir Pearson and Terry George.
In Rwanda, there are two main ethnic groups, the Tutsis and the Hutus , who are constantly fighting for power and control of Rwanda. Genocide constantly cleanses Rwanda’s streets as people turn away in fear. Paul Rusesabagina is a hotel manager for the Hotel Des Mille Collines in Kigali, Rwanda. He being a Hutu helps his family and other people they know, most Tutsis like his wife, take refuge from the Hutu army in his hotel. Before they even reach the hotel, they get taken by the Hutus and Paul has to pay General Bizimungu one hundred thousand Francs to spare the lives of his Tutsi friends that first took shelter in their home and another ten thousand Francs for his wife and kids’ lives. As they try to settle the few amounts of people they have in the hotel already plus the current guests, the Red Cross and other Hutus and Tutsis arrive at the hotel taking refuge adding the total from one hundred to over eight hundred Rwandans. As the genocide increases, the Europeans staying at the hotel are flown out of Rwanda by the United Nations and sent back home to avoid the danger. Paul tries to get help from the Belgians and the French after the fighting grows, but the

On the 6th April 1994 the presidents of Rwanda and Burundi were both assassinated leading to the start of the Rwandan Genocide. The president of Rwanda Juvénal Habyarimana (Hutu) was with the president of Burundi Cyprien Ntaryamira (Hutu) at the time when their plane was shot down leading to some "The most horrible and systematic human massacre we have had occasion to witness since the extermination of the Jews by the Nazis”. The Hutu rebels then began their massacre slaughtering 800,000 Tutsis within on hundred days, three quarters of the Tutsi population. Ethnic rivalry between the two groups, the Tutsi and the Hutu, played a large role in the assassination of both the presidents. In the lead up to the assassination the two groups had been continuously fighting due to the fact that they both believed that they were miss-treated through previous moments in history. In both the genocides of 1972 and 1994 the Hutu people were seeking revenge on the Tutsi people because of how they were treated in the past. This treatment of the Hutu people escalated when the Belgian colonists arrived in 1916, producing identity cards classifying the people according to their ethnicity. The Belgians favoured the Tutsi people, which led to better qualities of living, which infuriated the Hutu people “In Rwanda that genocide happened because the way the Belgians judged the people”. The rivalry between the two…

No matter if they were Hutu` or Tutsi. In the text it states, "Most of the people hiding in my hotel were Tutsis, descendants of what had once been ruling class of Rwanda. " I think in a way it wouldn't be fair for him to judge the Tutsis because his wife was one, and his kids were half, "You might say the divide also lives in me. I am the son of a Hutu farmer and his Tutsi wife. " To me, this story is remarkable in various ways.…

During the early 1900’s the Belgians had been colonizing Rwanda. The Belgians used the Hutu people who at the time were a majority, as slaves. The Belgian’s favored the Tutsi because they looked more “white”. The belgians would look at the skin tone, the size of their lips and the width of the bridge of their noses to determine this. The Belgians put the Tutsi people in charge of the Hutu’s…

The play Romeo and Juliet has two themes that rely on each other to create an understanding of the dynamics of relationships - the power of love and hate. One could easily conceive that hatred is the stronger theme when looking at the tragic denouement that befalls the star - crossed lovers. The ongoing feud between the Capulets and Montagues, functioning as a mean of hatred results in the deaths of the youths. However, a more profound exploration widens our horizons. Romeo and Juliet has become forever associated with love. The play has become an iconic story of love and passion, and the name “Romeo” is still used to describe young lovers. Shakespeare’s treatment of love in the play is complex and multifaceted. He uses love in its many guises to thread together the key relationships in the play.…

Rwanda, a small landlocked country in central Africa, has a long and rich history of differences and conflicts. One of the most known historic events of this region is the Rwandan Genocide which took 800,000 lives over the course of four months (Britannica). The conflict between two tribal groups, the Hutu and Tutsis, had been accumulating for decades before it finally reached its breaking point. The Rwandan genocide can be attributed to three main factors: Belgian colonial policies, tribal tensions between the Hutus and Tutsis, and the assassination of the Rwandan president. Before European colonization Rwanda was united under a total Tutsi government.…

The United States has a democratic government which means that the government is supposed to be ran through the people. The interesting fact about that is that the American government was created by ideas that they got from Britain's parliament (Nardo, 1994, p. 83). Since these governments are based off of each other, they do share a lot of similarities. Although Britain and the United States had comparable growth in their governments from when they started, in the end they had and still do have very different styles of democracy. The three main comparison points between the British parliament and American government are the branches of government, political offices and parties, and the style of politics. The differences between the British…

    Rwanda Genocide

In 1994, there was a mass genocide between the Hutus and the Tutsis of Rwanda. Rwanda is located near Uganda, Congo, and Tanzania. These countries are located in Africa. Due to the location of Rwanda it caused controversy because many countries surrounding it wanted to take control over it. It caused tension between multiple countries and sparked a war which lead to a genocide. There are three groups in Rwanda – Hutu, Tutsi, and Twa. The Twa group was initially the first group to settle in Rwanda and was soon followed by the Hutus and then the Tutsis, who came from Ethiopia. Once the Tutsis and Hutus took over Rwanda, there were always profound social differences between the two groups. The Tutsis gained social, economic, and political ascendency over the Hutus, who were primarily agriculturists. (Britannica, 2012) Other than these differences, there were no other differences between the Hutus and the Tutsis because there was intermarriage and use of common language between the two groups. The difference between the two was not apparent and therefore was never recognized. Because the Hutus were agriculturists there were agreements made that the Hutus would raise the crops for the Tutsis took over economically and politically. Germany took over Rwanda in 1894 and continued to control Rwanda until after World War I when they lost the colonies in 1933 to the Belgians. Once the Belgians took over, they gave all leadership positions to the Tutsis because according to the Germans and Belgians they looked the most European of the two groups. This irritated the Hutus because Rwanda at the time was 90% Hutu and 10% Tutsi and giving them leadership positions was unfair. Belgium also mandated that every person was to wear an identification card that stated if they were Tutsi, Hutu, or Twa (which are a very small group of hunter-gatherers in Rwanda). Rwanda continuously struggled for independence from Belgium, which then lead Belgium to switch the roles of leadership. Facing a…
