“The Story of an Hour” was written by Kate Chopin in 1894. The short story is about a 19th century wife named Mrs. Mallard, with heart problems. She was just given the news of her husband, Brently Mallard’s, death. The reaction of this particular woman was unexpected. She was happy about this sad news. So happy in fact, that when her husband walked through the door, surprisingly alive, she died of heart attack. The dramatic irony demonstrated in this story is what makes it both laughable and memorable. “Interlopers” was written by Saki and published in 1919. In “The Story of an Hour” Mr. Mallard tries to protect his wife from a heart attack by keeping her cooped up in the house, which she does not appreciate.
“There would be no one to live for during those coming years; she would live for herself. There would be no powerful will bending hers in that blind persistence with which men and woman believe they have a right to impose a private will upon a fellow-creature. A kind intention or a cruel intention made the act seem no less than a crime as she looked upon it in that brief moment of illumination.”
We can see in “Interlopers” that both of the arguing families wanted control over a piece land. The result of this desire led to family war. “The forest lands of Gradwitz were of wide extent and well stocked with game; the narrow strip of precipitous woodland that lay on its outskirt was not remarkable for the game it harbored or the shooting it afforded, but it was the most jealously guarded of all its owner’s territorial possessions. A famous lawsuit, in the days of his grandfather, had wrested it from the illegal possession of a neighboring family of petty
