You can dream and hope for big things but, don’t get your hopes up too high because things don’t always work out as planned. The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros is a multi-cultural novel that goes through the eyes of a girl named Esperanza. She is a young chicana, Mexican-American girl, around the age of 12. Her whole life has revolved around moving apartment to apartment. She dreams to move into a real house, like all the other kids live in. When they finally move in, the house isn’t at all what she thought it would be like, it was run down and super small. What the novel is trying to teach us is, learn to be happy with what you have and it’s okay to be different from other people. When Esperanza moves into her house, it’s a house on Mango Street, a street in a neighborhood full of Latinos in Chicago. It’s not the best place to live in, Chicago is an area for poor people to live in. Esperanza tells herself that she will not be happy and have the privacy she deserves until she one day moves out. Her whole life, she dreamed of living in a cute house with a white picket fence. Esperanza had gotten her hopes up high even when she knows that there will only be a small chance of her reaching her goal. Nothing will matter
But, her parents made her dreams come true, buying a house of their own. The only thing is, the house is in horrible condition and the house is in a terrible neighborhood. With that, Esperanza finds some friends that she likes. Lucy and Rachel live across the street from her. They have many adventures together, along with Esperanza’s little sister, Nenny. Over the summer, the three girls become sexually vulnerable. Esperanza was kissed by an older man at her first job. She doesn’t know if it was right or not, but she doesn’t know how to express her feelings. Instead, she found a love for writing, and she would only share it to older woman that she has certainty
