While driving down Hemphill Street, it is clear to perceive that the businesses and the houses that line the area has Hispanic influence. From Mexican flags to Spanish language on advertisements, the neighborhood spans from Felix Street to West Allen Avenue. Although this project was to explore strictly Hemphill, streets forking off east and west show signs of similar culture. The community is expanding and the culture is growing stronger, turning it into a city within a city.…

Now, more than ever, there are growing numbers of differences between each region in Texas than there are similarities. Two such regions that have undoubtedly diverged from their common ancestry are the Dallas-Fort Worth “Metroplex” area and the Austin “Hill Country” region. From sports and transportation, to leisure activities and geography, each area boasts its own culture that is neither superior nor lesser to its Lone Star counterpart.…

In The Cosmopolitan Canopy, the author, Elijah Anderson, discusses and describes public areas in the city of Philadelphia, where diverse groups of people can mingle and relax in peace, despite their differences. Anderson refers to these public spaces as “cosmopolitan canopies.” According to the author, who has lived and worked in different areas of Philadelphia for over 30 years, the city is more racially, ethnically, and socially diverse than ever and is full of “canopies,” which allows strangers to fearlessly interact with each other (Anderson, xv). The author provides a vivid description of the city as it would be seen on a walking tour, emphasizing the cosmopolitan canopies, as well as areas that could be classified as de facto segregation and usually experience more racial tension from visiting outsiders and other ethnic and social groups.…

Over the past few decades Texas cities have experienced phenomenal population growth. The U.S. Department of Agriculture reports that the percentage of the Texas population living in urban areas rose from 82.5 to 86.8 percent between 1980 and 2000. The Agriculture Department's summary data for Texas also show how much more difficult life is in rural areas of the state, with lower levels of educational attainment, lower wages, and higher rates of…

When Austin, TX began as a small settlement named Waterloo, no one could have predicted the amazing growth this city would experience. The first of many population booms occurred when this small town was named the capital of Texas and given its current name in 1839. Before long the population had soared to around 850 people.…

Lawrence, Kansas, the city in which I went to college, is roughly 35 square miles, where as Juneau is over 2,500 square miles. We also only have around 30,000 people here, Lawrence had about 90,000 people in it. I miss Lawrence so much, the feeling of being surrounded by like minded people, stores, and restaurants goes unmatched. Here I see very few people. My day to day interactions usually involve the people I work with, and my family. Everyone is very republican and private. Everyone owns a gun and goes to church with it every Sunday. Why they think they need to bring a gun to church is beyond. Back in lawrence I would meet tons of like minded individuals every day. Id wake up and go to my favorite book store, then have coffee with friends, and maybe catch a show that night. Here we have one bookstore, with a very sad selection mostly covering topics such as hunting and fishing. Here they call it game, but I call it lame. Also everybody here is so old. I miss being surrounded by young blood. The median age here is 37, compared to Lawrence which has a median age of 27. People are constantly talking about the weather, everyday it’s cold, I don't understand how a topic like this can be interesting to anyone, it seriously never…

I was born in New York City in 2002. In the next year, in 2003, my family moved to Upper Montclair. We moved to a neighborhood that at the time was nearly all white. In 2007, we moved down our street from the first house on the block, to the last. The family who we sold that house to was a black family. They still live there this very day, and my family is good friends with them. We spend every Christmas Eve with them every year. Ever since they joined the neighborhood, it has gotten increasingly more diverse. Now, we have Asian families, Jewish families, more black families, and Indian families. I feel that my street (Inwood Avenue) somewhat represents Montclair’s ethnic makeup. It’s very diverse, and we are all very accepting of each other’s culture and beliefs. I feel that the diverse town…

    Austin, Texas: Best City

    • 1768 Words

Austin was the one place that has always been a place where any person could live by their own standards and likings and be loved and accepted. It now has become part of the mainstream locust plague that seems to travel from town to town. Made up of real estate developers, corporate marketing execs and mainstream media companies. These entities in society appear to destroy any location that they think may become the new “it” spot, promote their brand, or give them free advertisement. The search for commerce and status in the world of media exposure has become the biggest priority in certain factions of society. These social scenes have taken the one place that I was totally free and accepted for who I really was by my own standards, not what society expected of me. The “Keep Austin Weird” and “Don’t Dallas my Austin” movements have failed. In American society the side with the money usually seems to win. But in the end, being angry and sharing the little guys opinion will not do anything. Austin for what it was, for what people fell in love with and eventually ruined, can never be brought back. After the phase is over and there is nothing else that the masses can get from the small city that was ruined by the Outlanders, it will become a ghost town that still has too high of cost of living for the artists to return. Like so many other places that have been…

My fairly short life so far has been full of diverse, sui-generis experiences. I have spent literally half my life in Electra, Texas, a small town with less than 3,000 people known for oil fields and farming while I have spent the other half in Owasso, Oklahoma, a fairly large suburb in the Tulsa metro area known for being full of character. Living in these two areas has given me the completely different aspects of life on living in a small town and a city. Electra has given me the unique experiences of a small, farm-driven town: simple life, a sense of community, and absolutely no traffic at all. Owasso has given me a completely different sense of culture, completely new social experiences, and occasionally a lot of traffic. Not only have…

My family has always wanted to take a trip down to Galveston during the torrid summer. It was an exciting feeling to get away from the dry heated bustle of summer living in Dallas. Every summer, my family packs up and hits the superhighway to our well awaited family vacation. As we drove through city after city, it became apparent that the world around us was changing. As I was peering through the back seat window, I noticed that the cities outside of town are defiantly different from living in the big city. There aren’t any tall skyscrapers or backed up bumper to bumper traffic, instead there are huge golden fields of corn and hay stacks, farms and huge bludgeon black cows.…

I was born in Dallas, TX and lived there up until my family moved to a small town thirty-two miles east called Terrell. Terrell was the type of town where you grew up reading about how a penalty kick helped win the varsity soccer game in the newspaper’s spotlight headline. Life in my eyes seemed standard and ordinary, however, recent family trips to Pleasant Grove quickly changed my outlook. To put into perspective, the residential neighborhood Pleasant Grove located in Dallas is where I first observed a series of encounters, such as automobile thefts in broad daylight, unlawful discharge of weapons and illicit drug offers from locals. This place…
