How Basketball Changed My Life
How basketball changed my life.
There are a lot of sports in the world that people love, but for me the sport that excites me the most is the beauty of watching a basketball swish through the net. Basketball has been my favorite sport ever since I was a baby. Basketball has help me in life and also made me a more successful person on and off the basketball court.
First off, my dad would always say the word “Work ethic”, when he would talk basketball to me. My dad would say “you got to have work ethic if you want to be above just an average ball player”. I would take his advice and almost every day I would be outside shooting about one thousand shots a day. I realize that if I wanted to be a pro I would I then would have to commit my very being to basketball. I wanted my shot to be automatic so that when I shot the basketball, people knew that it was going through the net. Also I wanted to be able to shoot from anywhere on the court and make the shot. “Work ethic”, that word stuck with me even in the classroom because I wanted to excel in the classroom as I excel on the basketball court. So when the teacher would give a lot of homework I wouldn’t complain like most kids and not do it but I would just buckle down and do my work and finish it on time. I knew that if I wanted to have a successful job it wasn’t going to come easy and so I would have to put in the work, because if it was easy then everybody would do it. The job I want in the future is software engineering so I know that field is a lot of studying and putting time into learning and practicing my craft in order to comprehend the software. Putting time into to my computer major will get me understand it better so that eventually I will excel at it, just like how putting time into making a thousand shots a day will make me a better shooter. Secondly my uncle will tell me that if you want to be good at basketball you will have to be dedicated. He said that “talent will only take you so far in basketball and that if you want to good, you have to be dedicated. Just about every morning at 6’o clock I would wake up and go running on the track field. Running to keep my body in shape because I knew that if I was to take a day off then there is someone else in the world working and trying to become better than me .The dedication that I used on the court I also applied it to the classroom. I wanted to be good at math so I would do extra problems then the teacher would give us in order to master how to do the steps. Also I would try to find every tutoring session there was to get help so that I could maintain and excellent grade point average in the class. Being dedicated help me pass all my classes with good grades. Lastly when it came to basketball for the most part my dad would ask me if I had the heart to be a basketball player at the next level. When he asked me if I had the heart, the first thing that came to my mind was Michael Jordan. When Michael Jordan got cut from his high school team he didn’t give up and he kept working hard to prove that he belong on that team that year. Now Michael Jordan is the greatest basketball player to ever live till this day and all it took was having the heart to become excellent at the sport of basketball. Just like Michael Jordan I too didn’t make the basketball team my freshmen year of high school but something inside me told me to keep fighting and not give up on my goal. The following summer I started running and eating right to drop weight so that next basketball season I was ready and in shape for it. Sure enough my sophomore year I made the basketball team. Having the discipline and the heart to get in better shape has got me to achieve a goal that I had set in my life at the time. My next goal was to score high on the ACT because when I first took it I did poorly. People in my home town thought I wasn’t going to go to college but I told myself my heart is going to propel me over the top. I just told myself that if I put my heart into studying and practicing the ACT prep book then the next time I will score high on it. Sure enough the results came back from my second ACT attempt and I scored much higher on it then I did the previous time. Johnson C Smith accepted me with an also an academic scholarship to go behind it also. So from now on if I don’t achieve something or don’t think I can do something just put my heart into it and I know that eventually I will overcome the obstacles at hand.
To conclude there are a lot of sports in the world but basketball has helped me in my life. Everything I used to get me better at basketball, I also applied it in the classroom. Listening and taking what my dad and my uncle install into my head made me a better person on and off the basketball court. Work ethic, dedication, and heart have propelled me to the next level in life. These are not just words to me, because their definitions have such life changing abilities.

I have been playing basketball basically my whole life, it is has shaped me into the person I am today. I started with just a ball and a hoop in my cousins front yard. I would just chuck the ball at hoop for fun, horsing around with my cousins. In elementary and middle school I would play with my friends at recess shooting around, dribbling in circles for the fun of it. I was even better then most of the boys who would play with my group on the courts. When I entered high school that was when I realized I was truly in love with the game. High school was where it was taken to a whole 'nother level. I was introduced to the real dynamics of the sport, it was where I learned that if I really want to do something that I love I had to put my all into it. I had to prove that I was one-hundred percent committed to the game. Practicing everyday for two hours, and…

I was so interested in playing basketball after watching my brother play, however, I started learning when I was 9 years old. So I kept doing it. For as long as I remember, I have been raised with a basketball hoop. This hoop stood firmly, looking down at the trees secured by patches of cement in my backyard, in my neighborhood, Dorchester. This hoop was my center of faith and tranquility surrounded by gunfires, shattering windows, car alarms. As a girl, I learned not to adventure any place else other than this hoop because going beyond its faded lines on the concrete is an unknown world full of hazards and danger. And when I did cross these seraphic lines, I could sense the bittersweet emotions running throughout the neighborhood, my home.…

Baseball may seem like a game where individuals remain around and sit tight for a ball to be hit, yet that is not what baseball truly is. To me, this game has changed the way I see life all in all. Each player has been taught to have great hard working attitude, regardless of whether it's in a weight room or even practices. Coaches have given leadership chances to players every year and this year it's my turn due to my hard working attitude and my capacity to lead a team. I didn't turn into the individual I am by simply sitting around. If not for baseball, I wouldn't have that additional push individuals need to succeed. Everything began off sophomore year during baseball season. It was about mid-path through…

People ask me why I care so much. They tell me it’s just a game, get over it. But soccer has never been just a game to me. Soccer has been consuming my time, thoughts, and body since my parents signed me up for small-time recreational soccer twelve years ago that developed into extremely competitive travel soccer. They, perhaps unknowingly, threw me headlong into a life of traveling countless miles, long nights of practice, and an unforgettable amount of tears, sweat, and bloodshed. All which persisted over the course of my extensive soccer career.…

For a majority of my childhood, the sport of baseball was the one activity I loved above anything else. Nothing could compare to the exhilarating freedom and satisfaction of bolting full speed around the bases, determined to steal, beating the "Throwdown" by a fraction of a second. The massive dust cloud kicked up by my cleats and the thunderous boom of the umpire shouting, "Safe!" made me feel empowered.…

Although I have had many injuries growing up, there is one that particularly changed my life for the better. The injury occurred when I was playing eighth grade football. It was August and we were scrimmaging Westfield; a very good team that had a lot of big players. The coach called me onto the field to play fullback, which means that I was probably going to carry the football. As I was running onto the field my heart started to beat a little faster. I had a bad feeling about getting the ball. I thought that I was going to get hurt because on the play prior the fullback ahead of me injured his knee on a run. Everything went well for the first few plays, but on the fifth play the coach called a fullback run. My heart was racing, at the snap of the ball I ran ahead for about an eight yard gain, but on the way down I felt a horrible pain in my right foot. I ended up going to the hospital a half an hour later, the doctor said that I had multiple fractures (6 to be exact), possibly some torn ligaments, and a dislocation of a few bones. I really did a number on myself. The doctor claimed to me that I would be out for at least 6 weeks, which is over halfway through the regular season. The doctor also highly recommended that I go see a sports injury specialist, or a foot specialist.…

My parents moved from Nigeria to Canada, where they had four children. Being the oldest, I have always tried to play the role of a protector and adviser, which is fulfilling when I see them feel comfortable when I'm around. At the age of five, my parents introduced me to the game of soccer, a game I have been intimately involved till now. This sport, being a team activity, helped shape my personality and character. A character in believing that working hard to contribute to a team effort is vital to the success of a club and that losing or winning a game is not the most important thing, rather learning and improving from it.…

On the 20th of October, 1998, the world was blessed with a talented basketball player. (That would be me.) Growing up, I didn’t really have reasons to like basketball. My family did not play or have interest in any kind of sport, besides for my father turning on the Lakers game once in a while. So my influence had to come about from a mishap. A mishap I am very thankful for. The television was playing the Lakers game in my living room one night when my attention was caught by an astonishing performance by a player wearing the number 8. Shot after shot he would score with emphasis, scowling after each basket. This player was arguably one of the greatest professional basketball players still to this day, Kobe Bryant. It was at this moment that…
