I believe that watching T.V supported my literacy. Televisions helped me build my literacy by supporting my critical thinking, problem solving, reading and writing skills. Ever since I was younger I would watch a ton of television. Some of my favorite shows growing up are Sesame Street, Wish Bone, Reading Rainbow and Bill Nye the Science Guy. Because of television, I would always be inquisitive and drive my family crazy with questions. However, I had to face a several barriers as a reader. Imagination does not always involve dealing with realistic feelings or reading books and having to understand ideas in an intellectual way. Imagination does not need to be taken seriously; intelligence, on the other hand, should be taken seriously. Giving a child a book will test his reading and literacy skills. Putting a child in front of a 20/20 broadcast will confuse him. Reading books are meant for learning, not to expand one’s imagination. Children are not supposed to believe that television and video games are bad for them when this addictive hobby only makes them happy. It is only an excessive amount of television entertainment that will truly damage a child’s intellect. Adults, however, understand both how to read and the difference between reality and fantasy worlds and the effects television has on their intelligence.…

But as reading both articles I have to agree more with Steven Johnson the reason why being is because I do think TV does makes us smarter. Watching the news is being smart because it lets us know what’s happing around the world such as our community. It gives us in idea what where dealing with around the world. Also shows like Glee gives you another example of the lives of high school students and the conflicts between them and also how music plays a big role in there school. As for kids I think TV does make them smarter the fact that they give shows like Barny, Dora, Bob the builder, and etc shows like these make kids learn the aspects of English they start to repeat words and start putting things together like puzzle, learn different types of animals, and…

Watching television can be educational in both a positive and negative way. In reality shows that teens from the age thirteen and up watch, teens are influenced in a negative way. They see adults acting chaotic; cursing, fighting, screaming, etc. in public areas. This gives people a negative outlook on the world. On the other hand, watching television can be educational in a positive way because there is more to television than reality shows. Television has many positively influenced shows such as: nature, animal, etc. and also negatively influenced shows.…

When it came to Neil Postman who talked about how television and movies can also double as being educational, I would have to agree with him. There are many shows on television that prove to be a good way to learn about different aspects of life that one may not have known about before. For example, the food network is where one would turn in order to learn more about a certain food dish, while a channel like the history channel would be used to learn about past times and other countries. Then, there are children’s shows like Dora the Explorer, that help children learn Spanish just by watching television for a mere thirty minutes. Postman made it clear that the television was not the only answer to educating people. There still needs to be a classroom environment in order to ask questions and socialize with other people.…
