How Can A Potato Replace A Car Battery?
Potatoes taste pretty good. Mashed, fried, baked, or scalloped, but how about taking the place of a car battery? If a potato can replace a AA battery and light up a light bulb, who’s to say multiple potatoes couldn’t serve the same purpose in a car? Potatoes use the acids within them to start a reaction between the copper and zinc wires on either side of it. This reaction causes the flow of electrons passing through the wires and using the positive and negatively charged electrons to power the bulb. Car batteries also run off a positive and negative charge. The salty flesh of the spud allows ions to pass through one electrode to another. With more of these acids acting as reactants, perhaps less potatoes could power more for longer periods of time. The question is how? GMOs. …show more content…
Obviously one potato is no where near enough to take over all of the functions your typical car battery serves, but perhaps several could. A conventional car battery can generate 480 watts per hour. Your average potato is only producing about 5. That’s merely half the wattage of a AA battery. By simply boiling a potato, you increase it’s reactivity by 10%. Clearly, one potato is no where near enough energy. What if a raw potato was modified to have the properties that give the boiled potato its extra 10%? Would that mean a boiled modified potato would increase to 20% more than the original spud? If we do the math, 10% of 5 is .5. This, added to the original is 5.5. A boiled un-modified potato would produce 5.5 watts of energy. If a modified potato produced that much to start then that added 10% would be .55. This would bring our total to a whopping 5.55 watts. That would mean that it would take 88 potatoes just to generate enough power for one hour. That’s a lot of potato and little time. Not even close to a sufficient substitute, so how do we fix
