The Inferno and the Journey of Dante 's Soul The Inferno by Dante Alighieri, written in the fourteenth century, remains regarded as one of the most influential literary works of all time. The epic poem tells of the journey of Dante through the Nine Circles of Hell, and of his many encounters with historical, and mythological figures. Acceptance of God 's ultimate authority on good and evil is portrayed as key test of a mortal soul. The Pilgrim 's journey through Hell is compared to every souls journey during their time on earth. Dante 's ability to so masterfully weave a story of the average man caught at a fork in the road, and deep metaphorical Christian philosophy has led to the poem 's resounding successes.
