How Can Our Generation Misunderstood
Our generation is commonly misunderstood by older generations. Older generation tend to think that they are always right and because they are older there isn’t much space to argue. These are some ways our generation is misunderstood. One common misunderstood is that we can’t live without technology. For example, when we sit and watch Netflix or play video games older generations might see it as being lazy. They don’t understand that our lives are also filled with stress and we might use this as a stress reliever. Another example is how often older generations use the stereotypical teenager that is always doing drugs and getting into trouble. Once something looks wrong they automatically assume that kids are getting into trouble when

Mark Bauerlain, in his book The Dumbest Generation, claims that the current under thirty generation is the “dumbest” in modern history, citing the fact that they “don’t know anything” (Bauerlain). Yet the under thirty generation has revolutionized social and linguistic conventions at a rate unmatched by all save for the Ancient Greeks, have grown up in an intelligence-centered culture, and, older people have been complaining about the ‘shortcomings’ of the younger generations for centuries. The facts don’t support Bauerlain - his claims that young people are “dumber” are completely unfounded and radiate an aura of elderly bitterness. Millenials are in the midst of transforming society and language at a breakneck pace, “the likes of which haven’t been seen since Greek civilization” (Clive). Young people “write far more than any generation before”, and have created “new forms of expression and rules for social behavior” (Ito, Clive).…

Compared to the technology we possessed before 1980, Our technology today is significantly more advanced and it is only the beginning. As the use of technology has increased dramatically in our everyday life many argue that it can be very useful, but others can say that technology only seems to be affecting the way Millennials think and process information. Mark Bauerlein is a prime example of this way of thinking, he declares that all of those under 30 years of age, also known as the Millennials, constitute the dumbest generation of modern history; and technology is the main culprit.…

In today’s modern world, technology has been the most popular and relevant commodity this generation has to offer. We have become equipped and dependent on computers, television, cellphones, and many more devices for entertainment and education. While a mass amount of people see technology as helpful in means of improving education, there are others who see differently. Many people throughout the years have been on the contrary about technology and what is has to offer to this generation. A widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a group of people, in other words known as a stereotype. Stereotype, the word that was going through my mind when the read the article “Generation Text: The Dark Digital Ages: 13 to 17”. The article written by Mark Bauerlein really had me thinking about how someone could perceive our generation in such a stereotypical way, which basically lumped all of us, with our unique and contrasting ideologies together. After reading Bauerlein’s article he makes our generation sound like kids and young adults who would do anything to acquire social acceptance from our peers. My emotional response to Bauerlein’s essay was upsetting. He sounds oblivious just in the sense that he merely categorizes all kids in the generation [our generation] in a stereotypical manner. Not only does he…

Mark Bauerlein claims that “you guys don’t know anything.” And by “you guys”, he means the under-thirty generation, OUR generation, which he believes to be “The Dumbest Generation.” However, we are just adapting our learning abilities to the situation in which we are educated, which is completely media-focused right now. Technology has provided us with the chance to do our work and research more efficiently. Bauerlein has made a serious, judgmental claim about today’s society, but he has forgotten to acknowledge the positive effects of the new world’s technology and learning habits.…

As the years go by, every generation has an idiosyncratic aspect to them that no other generation has before. This aspect, though, could either be positive or negative. The Baby Boomers (1946-1966) are characterized by the increase of births due to the end of World War I and World War II. Generation X is known for their independence, both a negative and positive factor. Finally, the Millennial Generation known for their assumption of technology; this is also both a positive and negative thing especially when it comes to the work force. Although some see Millennials as lazy due to their dependency on technology, it might be this dependency that makes the Millennials an unique and important member of the workforce due to their experience…

The question, “Are we the dumbest generation?” has been asked by many and we all have different point of view on it. There’s no wrong or right answer when it comes to it, but I, for one think that we are not the dumbest generation. Because technology has upgraded since it has been introduced to us all and technology has affected us in marvelous ways. Bauerlein stated, “The advantages of twenty-first century teen life keep expanding, the eighties and nineties economy and the digital revolution providing miraculously quick and effortless contact with information, wares, amusements, and friend.” People have come along way without it and to think now that we can not live without it, it truly is amazing.…

The world we live in is continuously changing and developing, and as we move forward into this new generation, people are becoming more dependent on technology. Reading habits have changed and the systems for education are much more reliant on new forms of technology. This is reasoning to many as to why this generation is the dumbest. However, this is an illogical ideology because although this new generation is more technology dependent, these forms of technology can be used to the advantage of many students and are why this new generation is not the dumbest, but the most advanced.…
