How Can We Reduce the Incidents of Illegal Passing of Stopped School Buses?
Safety at the school bus stop is an issue that is widely discussed with the beginning of each new school year yet it’s probably one of the most neglected topics as the school year progresses. Most of us as humans crave routine to have our day run smoothly and there is nothing more routine than the route a school bus runs each day. The unfortunate side of that routine is complacency. Complacency on the part of motorists and school bus drivers alike. Stop arm violation reports have been collected by the state of North Carolina since 1999 revealing a persistent problem that exposes school children to ever increasing danger at the bus stop. Since that same year, thirteen children have lost their lives while getting on or off the bus revealing an even more dangerous dilemma. Are motorists passing stop school buses because they are unaware of the way the law is written? Are motorists trying to “beat the clock” by passing the bus? Is it worth risking a life by passing the bus? This is an issue that hits close to home for me because I’ve worked in school transportation for almost fourteen years. I see every day the potential risks motorists take while traveling.
School bus drivers are trained in passenger stop procedures. This procedure involves taking steps using safety equipment installed on the bus by the manufacturer to alert surrounding motorists of the driver’s intentions. This procedure involves using the yellow flashing lights on the bus to alert nearby motorists to begin slowing down. Once the bus comes to a stop and the stop sign and front walk arm are deployed and the students enters or exits the bus. It’s unfortunate to realize motorists usually see the flashing yellow lights and speed up to avoid being stopped by the bus.

There have been major accidents throughout the United States that have produced over 100,000 crashes and roughly 1,000 deaths in the past. In 1979 Ken Fishel was at the intersection of 436 and highway 50 when a woman ran a red light causing him to T-Bone the passenger side of her vehicle. Ken ended up with serious injuries consisting of whip lash and a mild concussion to the head. While the women escaped the accident with minor injuries this could been easily prevented (interview). To combat this problem the United States has placed Red light cameras at certain intersections across the states. Safety should always be the top priority on the road, and one way of limiting car accidents is for everyone to make sure they always stop at a red light. Since these cameras have been in place accidents and death tolls have decreased tremendously. The government should continue the use of red light cameras at intersections throughout the United States.…

Safety is one of the most important aspects of the task given to an educator. My main concern is that the trust and respect is fulfilled daily while making sure a child is not injured in the given environment. Daily tasks must include a thorough cleanup of the classroom, making sure all loose furniture, accessories and electrical appliances are covered when not in use. All chemicals, utensils, and school supplies should be in collaboration with indoor rules including loose or locked gates, loose playground equipment and making sure clothing is secure during playtime. The child’s safety allows consistent development within the classroom.…

According to Claire Ricke, a recent survey found that drivers committed more than 78,000 illegal passing violations in a single day. This evidence show just how dangerous a normal day is and how much danger you could be in just by getting on a bus. It’s scary to know that you're not always safe, even when doing something as simple as getting on a bus, but this can all be avoided if people would stop being in such a hurry and slow down to think about the consequences of their actions. Most people would say that it's almost impossible to stop because when you're in a hurry you don't think as clearly and you aren't as observant, but that’s not the case. It is possible to think and slow down when you're in a hurry, and I know because I've done this myself. It was a test day and I had already woken up late with very little time to spare. I was disorganized, in a hurry, and I was barley making it. Everything was so rushed that I wasn't thinking clearly until my sister told me to calm down and get every thing I needed then to meet her in the car. I managed to calm down, and I got every thing I needed and met my sister in the car. I’ve been in a hurry many times, but I still find time to think and get every thing done. Being late to work or an interview is not worth another person's life, so slow down and think before you…
