Phone Calls

CBS News reported that as of February 2010, 4.6 billion people worldwide had cell phones. People can be seen using cell phones all over the place, including in their homes, in their cars, in stores, in offices and in schools. Cells phones have a huge social impact on American society these days, sometimes in positive ways and sometimes in negative ways.
Maintaining Connections
Cell phones make it easier for people to maintain connections with family and friends. Users can contact family members or friends at any time and parents can easily contact their children whenever they wish. They never have to worry about missing important calls.
Interruptions
Many cell phone users keep their phones turned on all the time, so incoming calls interrupt face-to-face conversations they may be having when their phones ring. Incoming calls interrupt appointments. Incoming calls interrupt family mealtimes or time spent with their children. Incoming calls even disrupt their sleep. Obviously, all these interruptions present a negative impact on social relationships.
Texting
Texting allows cell phone users to send and receive brief messages quickly, without having to have a whole conversation. While that can be convenient at times, it also decreases the opportunities people have to hold conversations and communicate directly with one another. The more communication between family members and close friends decreases, the greater the negative social impact. In addition, teens often send text messages to friends during school instead of paying attention during class, which has a negative impact on their education.
Photos
Many cell phones these days allow users to take photographs with their phones. They can then send these photos to others. Since people generally have their cell phones with them much more often than they have their cameras handy, this allows them to capture images they might otherwise miss. Sharing photos with others in this way can help people maintain connections.
Adolescents
Cell phones can have an especially negative impact on adolescents. While it may be helpful for them to be able to easily keep in touch with friends and family members, the popularity of sending text messages may prevent them from developing healthful communication skills. In addition, teens frequently use text messages to bully others or spread gossip about their peers. In some instances, they use their cell phones to send inappropriate (i.e. sexual) photos to friends, who may then pass the photos on to others. Ideally, parents should monitor their child's cell phone use carefully to make sure he uses it appropriately, though not all parents do so.

Technology has came a long way and will continue to improve and explore unknown territories. If texting could be listed as a skill, many of my friends would qualify as highly skilled in that area. I am glued to my phone and always texting so I know firsthand just how much texting can be abused and its less than helpful qualities. Cell phones are not just a privilege in people’s lives anymore but have become a necessity in order for people to function on a daily basis. Not a minute goes by where cell phones aren’t being used somewhere at some time. The average American looks at their phone 150 times per day. That works out to once every 6.5 minutes of every hour that the average person is awake. (Glaser) As high as those numbers are, the usage of cell phones will only continue to increase as time goes on. Cell phones have their advantages but the amount of time people spend on their cellphones is ruining face to face communication, jeopardizing jobs in the future, and putting people’s lives at a higher risk.…

Cell phones come in handy during an emergency. First, if someone is driving and lands into an accident, most cars don’t have the “GM on star” button so they are most likely to use their cell phone to get help. Anyone can dial 911, and get the help they need in just a matter of seconds. Whereas if someone didn’t own a cell phone it would be very difficult to get help as fast. There are times where someone can be in a very critical situation where if they do not get the help they need as soon as possible they could potentially die. For example, if someone’s head got cracked open during the car accident they would immediately need help from the paramedics. Also, if there is an urgent situation, where you believe there is someone following you for example, and your life is in danger then cell phones are there as a tool. One can easily contact the police or a family member to seek help, and save their life. In contrast, if someone did not have a phone then the “stalker” has a better chance of getting a hold of you. It will make it hard for someone to escape a situation like this. Thirdly, cell phones also come in handy when you forget to inform your parents or friends about any new event coming up. For example, unexpectedly you have to stay after school to finish a test, and your mom and dad are not aware of it. Then you can use your cell phone to let them know. Overall, cell phones can be realistic in times of an emergency.…
