When NF, a christian artist, was a senior in high school his mother died from a pill overdose. Ever since then, NF has been struggling with getting out his feelings and thoughts about his mother’s death. He decided he would let this out through his music and from this, came How Could You Leave Us. There are three main things to look at when fully analyzing this song; Connotation, Attitude, and Theme. (Quick warning: this song does not hide anything, and has been known to bring grown men to tears on several occasions.) The connotation of How Could You Leave Us is quite simple. It is about his mother choosing drugs over him and his siblings. There were two levels of this song. The spiritual and the physical level. The physical level is his mother taking pills and drugs. She was never around because the pills took over her mind, thoughts, and priorities. One example of this
The beginning is sad and reminiscent as he remembers what it was like for his mom to be there. You can tell because of two things. One his voice is a very sad and soft tone, and two the lyrics. These first lyrics are just him telling the listener how he’s sad with his mother's actions before and after her death. After the line that states “Some lady in the corner watching us, while she taking notes”, he becomes angry with his mother. Again you can tell this by his tone and lyrics. These lyrics are a little more hostile. They are more bold than the previous lyrics. The second shift is after the line that states “How would you leave us? Why would you leave us? Hey.” in the second chorus. He becomes so sad and angry at the same time that he’s exhausted so his feelings become softer and tired. We know this because his lyrics are still bold and hostile, but his tone is more breathy and he begins to
