Even though his speech was only 2 minutes long and 272 words it touched people hearts and made the nation stronger, and made people think of how wrong slavery

Conflict between the North and South was inevitable by the time Lincoln gave his first inaugural address because several Southern states had seceded from the union and because Lincoln would not have maintained the status quo for long. For a good two decades, the United States had been experiencing more and more turmoil over slavery. The Republican North was emphatically against slavery, viewing it as an evil abomination, while the Democratic South viewed it as integral to the Southern tradition. Northerners bannered together in the name of justice, while Southerners rallied to preserve their way of life. Feeling that their entire culture was gravely threatened, Southerners became more and more organized and militant, culminating in South Carolina’s secession from the United States of America on December 20, 1860.…

For Lincoln the South had broken covenant and started an insurrection. In essence, Lincoln, like George Washington in the Whiskey Rebellion or Lyndon Johnson in the late 1960s, brought unification to all US citizens; Northerners and Southerners But Lincoln’s goal was not galvanized by equality, though he did detest slavery, Blacks were (at least at first) a secondary issue. Blacks were mobilized as a military need. Emancipation, Lincoln saw, would further undermine the Confederacy while providing the Union with a new source of manpower to crush the rebellion. Lincoln goal was to change the government from states to a union in order to keep the United States from dissolving (Wills 161).…

I think if Lincoln had been allowed to oversee the Reconstruction process we would have seen a smoother transition from slavery to non-slavery as a way of life in the South. It is likely there still would have been problems, but Lincoln was strong enough to stand up for what was right. Lincoln was prepared to help a nation ripped apart and help heal its wounds and the people were aware of this. Which that is one of the reason why he was so influential and successful when he was appointed as a leader. Congress would have been more willing to pursue an active Reconstruction policy past the Civil War Amendments and perhaps land reform or more secure political rights could have been achieved.…

On March 4, 1861, when Abraham Lincoln was inaugurated into the presidency, he gave a speech that would express his desire to resolve the sectional tensions without warfare. He held this position because he felt he didn’t have the right to interfere with the South’s state rights, and by extension, their system of slavery. Unfortunately for Lincoln, the growing conflict between the North and the South wouldn’t be stopped and the Union entered the Civil War with the seceded Confederate states of the South in the second month of his presidency. As the war raged on and the damage it had on the Union was revealed, Lincoln decided the protecting the Union was more important than maintaining the Southern state’s rights. In Lincoln's letter to Horace Greeley he said "My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery."
