On November 4th, 2008 Obama won the Democratic nomination instead of Hillary Clinton. Obama was elected from the state of Illinois. He also decided that Joe Biden were to be his running mate for vice presidency. Biden was previously Delaware’s Senator. During the race to presidency Obama went up against republican nominee John McCain of Arizona. Obama received 365 of the electoral votes with a strong 53% of the popular vote. While his opponent McCain received 173 electoral votes with 45% of the popular votes. This election made Barack Obama the first African American president in the United States’ history. The president prior to this historical election was George W. Bush. Obama also ran a second term against presidential candidate republican Mitt Romney. Obama won the election with 332 electoral votes and 51.1% of the popular vote. Obama became the third consecutive president to win a second term since 1820.
