According to James Adams, a writer and historian of 1913, it is "that dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement….but a dream of social order in which each man and each woman shall be able to attain to the fullest stature of which they are innately capable, and be recognized by others for what they are, regardless of the fortuitous circumstances of birth or position” ( “The American Dream”).The reason why many, including his own, crossed oceans and left family behind for. Barriers are bound to exist and slowly destroy motivation, hope, and courage. Certain opportunities, treatments, and interactions were limited to specific races only causing anger to build and many to feel more and more disconnected. It created a divide among the American people which has prevented society from moving forward. Presidential candidate Barack Obama is aware of this issue and goes on to address the division and build a strong bond with the repetitive use of the word “our”. He states, “our schools and our communities; by enforcing our civil rights laws and ensuring fairness in our criminal justice system”. It is not yours or mine, however it is ours, all American citizens. This allowed many individuals to relate and realize that governments, laws, and schools were not created to benefit only a certain group of people, but rather for all despite race, gender, or religion. Moreover, this unity will allow for great things to follow. Obama allows others to visualize this idea through the use of a metaphor. He points out, “by providing this generation with ladders of opportunity that were unavailable for previous generations”. Once separation barriers are destroyed and all are treated equally, all those who put in effort and are determined will see their hard work pay off and will achieve their dreams.
