The 13th constitutional amendment was ratified in 1886 and stated “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment”. After the Civil War slavery was not allowed no more in the United States. The 13th amendment was meant to protect the people from being enslaved once again. The economy was one of the issue that came up after the 13th amendment. Did the 13th amendment really set free the ex-slaves or were they enslaved once again but now in a discrete way? or did our government find new ways to enslave people?

After the Civil War the economy went down.
As many of black men were being sent to prison, most of them are innocent. In the documentary “13th” they talk about how slavery was an economic system, after the civil war the south’s economy was shattered. As the economy went down they wanted to somehow get the economy up. As having slaves in the United States was prohibited it is hard for those who relied on the slaves to get the economy up again. Corporation were now invested in free labor as black men were being punished their punishment was that they had to work for other corporations for free. They were taking away their freedom that they had been given after the civil war by making them work for free like they did when they were
slaves.
The black men were losing the freedom that they had been given after the civil war, but most of them did not noticed that. The way their freedom was being taken away was by them being accused of committing a crime and being view as criminals. Their freedom was being taken away once they were sent to prison. Although white and black are being sent to prison white are protected by police officers inside prison while they do not care about black and abuse them. In the documentary “13th” they say that black or latinos were being sentenced in prison for a long time for possession of crack while white just got slap on the wrist. This show how they just want the black to be sent in prison and just hold white in prison for a very short time. They only have white in prison for a short time so people wont noticed that black are sent to prison to do free labor. Inside the prison they do not treat them as equal they treat white, most of the people who work with the law and prison they abuse black and mistreat them.
Black men did not fully gain freedom after the Civil War nor with the 13th Amendment. The Government is just finding new ways to to enslave them again, they are being treating bad similar to when they were slaves. The government is taking their rights away and is over using the power they have to take control over the black and somehow to have them as slaves onceagain.
