The Buddha, also known as Siddhartha Gautama, is known as the first person to achieve enlightenment. Before he attempted this enlightenment, he was a prince. After wandering out of his castle one day, however, Siddhartha saw a sick person, an old person, and a corpse for the first time. This caused him to realize how much suffering there was in the world and he set out to find out how to relieve himself of it. He first searched for the answer by living a life of extreme destitution, but he did not find his answer there. He ended up following what he called the “middle way,” a life of neither extreme riches or poverty. One day, Siddhartha sat under a tree in deep meditation, achieved enlightenment, and became the Buddha, meaning “enlightened one.” For the next forty-five years, he resolved to spread his knowledge to all people, and became the first leader of his own religion.
The religious leader of Tibetan Buddhism is called the Dalai Lama. The way that the Dalai Lama is chosen can seem very strange to those who do not know the religion. An example of this is when a Dalai Lama died and a five-year-old child was chosen as the next one. When he died, the monks found a boy who was born around the time of his death.
