How Did Caesar Tagliatti Influence Australian Architecture
Enrico Tagliatti is one of Australia’s architect who was born in Milan in 1926. He graduated from Milan Polytechnic in architecture in 1954 and immigrated to Canberra and won a gold medal from Australian Institute of Architects in 2007. He designed many notable projects for Australian capital city and that Giralang primary school is one of them. Giralang primary school opened in 1977 in Australian Capital city and succeeded to win the Royal Australian Institute of Architects in 1997. The school was designed by Mr Enrico Tagliatti who designed four schools in Canberra that Giralang was third he designed that considered most important architecturally and being relatively unaltered gives it added significance. The successful building identifies
the only government school that listed on the Royal Australian Institute of Architects ACT register of important 20 centuries building and one of the thirteen places in Canberra where included on the RAIA National Heritage Register. The successful building design won acclaim for its innovation and also reflected the latest international education trends. The school building and its neighbourhood Healthcare complex are located in an extensive landscape that shows architect’s organic style of architecture with cantilevered roofs and asymmetrical angular geometric forms. The school building is an equal distribution of forms and areas about the central library, the centre of the school, nested spaces, neared by classrooms on three sides and internal courtyard on its fourth side. In addition, smaller courtyard had designed to provide natural light and increase an openness feeling. Red painted metal, blue carpets, yellow vertical gutter overflows and white deep clear finished timber eaves which can be considered as a set of a palate of primary colours also had played a significant role in the building. The Architectural review illustrated the well-designed school as being “like an adventure playground turned to education use”.
