Often, to eke out their wretched diet of rice and bits of fish, she would set her son alongside the path to beg food from passerby.…

In the next few months, they lost about 218 more men to the wilderness and natives as they traveled across the New World (making the total men lost at this point 418 out of 600). They were forced to kill their horses for food, and eventually they constructed boats in an attempt to find Mexico, and other Spaniards. They made five boats each with enough room for roughly 50 men. # Yet ANOTHER storm hits them, and this one lasts for six days, and several boats are lost After the storm they are so desperate for water that some of them even resort to drinking salt water, resulting in several more deaths. At this point only about 40 men of the initial 600 are alive. They shipwreck on an island which they promptly call Malhado, “The Island of Doom”.# Over the next few months, more survivors die off, and others are put into slavery, including Cabeza de Vaca. After following an epic that revolved so completely around men, The Odyssey has quite a lot of female roles. True, the ancient Greeks had a better androgynous balance than other civilizations, and this is reflected very clearly in The Odyssey. Femininity has not only a bigger role in this epic, but it seems as though it is honored with its own unique power. This is shown in characters like Circe and Athena, but also subtextually in the many female weavers throughout the story. On his journey home, Odysseus weaves his way through many hardships and temptations that are created by the women he meets on his voyage back to Ithaca. Calypso and Nausikaa play a large role in representing temptation while Penelope represents loyalty for she was the only good and loyal woman who waited for Odysseus to return home unlike Clytemnestra who found a new lover.…

“How could a mere mortal resist ME? A goddess, a tempting, alluring, immortal!” With thoughts like this, Circe tormented herself as she paced the length of the island. When the sun started to set, heartbroken and devastated Circe went back to the warmth of her lair. But no amount of warmth in the air now mattered. No amount of warmth she felt now would be as comforting, as wonderful as the warmth of Odysseus’s body next to her, as warm as a fireplace on a cold snowy day as the wind howls outside and the trees tremble in fear of the mighty wrath that the god of wind, Aeolus has unleashed, as the land gets slowly covered in white and the beautiful, luscious grass, gasps for air while the ruthless snow suffocates the life…
