Galileo Galilei has been and will forever be known for his discoveries and inventions, and how they contributed to our planet. Many known scientific theories have spawn from the ingenious mind of Galileo. Like all discoverers, you either make a theory or support a theory. Many people before Galileo's time thought that the earth was the center of the universe and all of the planets orbited it. He proved the Heliocentric Theory of Copernicus in one of his many books. This stated that the sun was the center of the universe and that earth and all of the other planets revolved around it. …show more content…
When he was young, his father (Vincenzo Galilei) decided that when his son grew up he would be a doctor.
In 1581 Galileo was sent to University of Pisa to study medicines. He discovered in school that he became very fond and very good at mathematics. He then convinced his father to let him become a mathematics professor. In 1609 Galileo decided that he wanted to do something big, so with his knowledge in math and all of his good ideas he patented the very first telescope. After using it plenty of times, he started to make observations that the moon was not flat, but very similar to earth, terrain wise. He also found out new characteristics of other planets like, the four moons belonging to Jupiter, the nature of saturn itself, and the phases of
Venus.
Other than being an astronomer he also made countless contributions to the physical part of science. He first evolved the concept of inertia, even before Isaac Newton, which declared that an object remains in rest until acted on by another force.
In Galileo’s day, the catholic church was a big and powerful organization to be apart of. When Galileo started publishing books about his astronomy discoveries and the Theory of Copernicus, the church (being very bias against the theory) called Galileo in to answer to charges brought against him. He was then labeled as a person who goes against all church beliefs and was told that he could not share his findings publicly as to why he thought that the sun was the center of the universe. After studying more about the fact, he stood his ground and published a book to tell why he was correct. He was then sentenced to life imprisonment and later died at the age of 77. I admire this because everyone was against his theory yet he didn’t give up on his opinion. It would've been so easy to stop expressing his opinion publicly, but if he would've we wouldn’t know what we do about the universe.
