How Did General Lee React To The Battle Of Gettysburg

Boom! The sounds of cannons going off. Men yelling in fear and excitement. The thought of war is a strong feeling. War can be exciting for some or horrible for others. War to me is interesting to learn about because these men took their lives to save ours. Gettysburg General Lee planned to assemble his army in the town of Gettysburg which is 35 miles southwest of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. When he got there he found out that the union forces had already arrived the previous day. Confederate forces were able to drive the outnumbered union army to Cemetery Hill. General Lee assigned Ewell, who had taken command, to attack but he declined because he saw that the union army was in too strong of a position. Over night, three more corps for the union came and strengthened the defence. One of them under the command of Winfield Scott Hancock. The line was extended along side Cemetery Hill up to a hill known as Little Round Top. The union was in strong positions. General Lee assigned James Longstreet to attack where he stood but didn't get
British batteries opened up en masse and were met by Jackson's mad 24 artillery pieces. The main group of British soldiers moved to the canal near the swamp. Britains light troops, led by Robert Rennie advanced along the river bank and were overwhelmed by the American defenders. Rennie was shot dead. The British soldiers retreat due to the fact that there only commander was dead. The British troops came to find out that they would be cut down by Musket balls.The British soldiers that were left thought that they could move with the fog but as soon as the fog risen, American Forces stuck Britain with cannons and rifles.
