How Did he Build an Empire?
Genghis Khan is one of the most important leaders in history. He went from rags to riches in his life of 60-70 years, Genghis Khan united the mongols by setting simple, easy to follow rules and putting others before his family, unlike most clans of that time period. Born around 1162 and died in 1227, (A&E Television Networks) he was arguably the most important leader in the eastern hemisphere.
Born around 1162, he was raised in a clan, but after his father was poisoned and killed, the clan deserted his family to avoid feeding them, (Szymanski) forcing them to survive on their own. Genghis killed his older half brother and took the head of the family, but was later captured and enslaved. He eventually escaped. In 1178 Genghis married his wife, Borte. She too was captured.(A&E Television Networks) Genghis launched a daring but successful rescue to get her back.
Genghis made alliances, by using his reputation as a fierce warrior. He did not put his family in high positions, but trusted followers. (Schlesinger) He did this to avoid being assassinated by jealous family members or family that wanted his position. As time went by, he began to acquire followers with his reputation and skill in battle. By doing this he unites the mongols into an empire that will continue to grow larger by the day. With his followers, he gained land and built the economy.
To keep his empire together, Genghis set laws that everyone was required to follow. (Szymanski) He banned the enslavement of any mongol, women, and children. As well as the slavery ban theft of livestock was punishable by death. All looting of enemies was to be delayed until a clear victory.
