After his father’s death Temujin’s own clan abandoned him and his family so they wouldn't have to feed them and waste their food. A little after the death of his father and his own clan leaving him behind, Temujin killed his older half brother and took over as like the king of the household. In 1178 Temujin married a woman named Borte, Temujin and Borte have 4 sons named Ogedei Khan, Jochi Khan, Tolui, and Chagatai Khan and an unknown number of daughters (History.com). Instead of putting his relatives into key positions he put his allies in those positions to execute the leaders of enemy tribes while incorporating the remaining members into his own clan. He ordered his men to not loot until they knew for sure that it was a complete victory and that it was safe to do so. He also forbade the selling and kidnapping of women, banned the enslavement of any Mongol and made livestock theft punishable by death. His first campaign outside Mongolia was against the Xi Xia kingdom of northwestern China. After many raids the Mongols launched a major initiative in 1209 that brought them to the doorstep of Yinchuan, the Xi Xia capital (History.com). His army consisted almost entirely of cavalrymen, who were good at horseback riding and deadly with bow and arrows. When Temujin returned to Mongolia in 1225, he controlled territory from the Sea of Japan to the Caspian Sea.
