Now most hospitals require a bachelor’s degree in nursing, but at Pekin it only requires that you have an associative degree. But they are thinking about changing the requirement to be a bachelor’s degree. It also requires to be a certified RN and three to five years of related work, depending on the hospital. Julie received her associative degree in nursing at Illinois Central College in East Peoria, Illinois. After gaining her associative degree, Julie went on to work at the Hopedale Medical Complex, for ten years. At Hopedale, Julie spent six years as a pharmacy tech, two years as a Certified Nursing Assistant, or CNA, and two years as a nurse. When she left Hopedale, she went to work at Pekin Hospital. At Pekin, Julie had many jobs within the hospital before she became the House Supervisor. During the interview, Julie stated “I was the medical/surgical nurse, and ER nurse, a labor and delivery nurse, and a postpartum nurse, all before becoming the House Supervisor.” This means that she assisted in surgeries and getting patients ready for surgery, worked in the ER treating patients, worked with mothers and babies during the deliveries, and worked with the mothers after giving birth. Julie had more than enough years in a related field, has her associates degree, and is a certified RN, or registered nurse. So when it was time for the Hospital to hire more House Supervisors, Julie was more than qualified. Julie has been the House Supervisor at Pekin Hospital for eighteen years, and is very content on where she is at. While Julie could move up higher into the Hospitals administrative duties, she does not want to. She likes helping patients, and the responsibility from her job, although it can be…

One rainy afternoon, mid-November, when Simon’s father had asked to speak to him. Simon’s father, John Thomas, was very strict and concerned with the path his son should follow after high school. Simon’s father was among many who were concerned about the decision he had made. There were about two months until the deadline for applying to universities and colleges and Simon had an idea of where he wanted to go. Simon’s father asked him “So have you decided what you want you’re going to do?” Simon nervously nodded his head. “I want to apply for medical school to become a nurse.” His father gave a hysterical laugh, almost as if he was offended. “Is this is a joke? Seriously you must have mistaken yourself for something else.” The room had gone silent. Simon knew that his father wanted to tell him that there are many better paths he could have chosen. After five minutes Simon had stood up, firmly he said, “This is what I want to do with the rest of my life, I want to do something where I can help people.” Simon had faintly walked back upstairs to his room and had not spoken to his father for the rest of the…
