James’ influence on Cather Each writer will have their own writing styles, while these can be traced back to the childhood or adolescence or even can be influenced by other writers. Henry James, a well-known psychologist, novelist and philosopher, forming his writing styles in his young age. Then, as his literature works being published, they have great impact on some of writhers, for example, Willa Cather. And I will discuss Henry James first, and to analyze his writing style. While, the pressure on him makes him feel distressed and upset. The insecurity brings on him to become a delicate people. Because of his delicacy, he is good at observing people’s mind and depicting the characters’ personalities vividly. He often uses the physical appearance or behaviors to describe the characters. For example, in “The Wings of the Dove”, the image of Kate reveals thoroughly by the words James’ use. “She readjusted the poise of her black closely-feathered hat; retouched, beneath it, the thick fall of her dusky hair; kept her eyes aslant no less on her beautiful averted than on her beautiful presented oval. She was dressed altogether in black; which gave an even tone, by contrast, to her clear face and made her hair more harmonious dark.” The word “black” and “dusky” are two adjectives to describe the hair color of Kate. However, the adjectives also reveal the personalities of Kate. “Dusky” not only depicts the color of an object but also being associated with the gloomy and distorted characteristic. Additionally, her clear face forms a sharp contrast with her dark hair. This implies that she is a dual personality people. So, we can hardly see any materials about their personal affairs or any evidence about their sexuality. Maybe, they are unwilling to let us know the truth. Therefore, what the readers can do is to appreciate their novels. James writes lots of articles and novels in his life. In addition, he becomes the one who have influence on other writers and readers. As for Cather, she is a female writer that seldom be seen at that time.
