Vietnam into conflict, struggle, and hardship. (Ho Chi Minh)
Ho Chi Minh was a man who raised helped the Vietnamese gain a voice and helped make Vietnam a free and independent country. Ho Chi Minh was born into a very wealthy Vietnamese family. Ho went to the National Academy in the city Hue. This school was one of the best schools in all of Vietnam. Ho’s superb education was only one of the many good thing about him. This fine education helped him work on the Treaty of Versailles. The Treaty of Versailles was a famous document that marked the end of WWI. Since France, Great Britain, and Russia made most of the document, and Vietnam was under French rule at the time. Ho got to work on it. During these peace talks he participated in many political debates. It was here where he first proposed the idea of a independent Vietnam. He tried to present his idea to Woodrow Wilson, but this did not work. After this event his career would continue to be working toward the freedom of Vietnam. He created and joined many organizations that fought for this. The first one was the Indochinese Communist Party. These men who would later be the leaders of Northern Vietnam all met in Hong Kong to discuss how to take back Vietnam. These men went through all of Vietnam to gain support for this cause. This truly shows the righteousness of Ho because he started a revolution of freedom among his people. Later he also created the League for the Independence of Vietnam, also known as the Viet Minh. The Viet Minh became the governing body of North Vietnam. The Viet Minh did a great service in WWII when they fought for the Allies and helped defeat Japan. Once the war had ended, the Viet Minh started taking control of Vietnam. France, which had just been taken over by Germany, was in a state of recovery. Thus this was the perfect time for the Viet Minh to strike. The Viet Minh started taking over large portions of the country. These series of attacks would later be known as the August-Revolution. Under Ho’s powerful leadership, the Viet Minh finally won the war, and Ho took his place as president under the newly found Democratic Republic of Vietnam. He took control and started his work. In this time he created a new and stable government, and created a capital where the whole country could be managed. It took a while, but the French started to recover from German rule. There economy was on an upward trajectory and their military was back to full strength. Once they returned to the state of being one of the most powerful countries in the world, they were ready for a fight. They felt that Ho had taken Vietnam to easily and they wanted to gain the territory that was once theirs back. In 1946 Vietnam and France engaged in the combat of war. Years and years of fighting went on. Ho led Vietnam with passion, but the French were stronger than before. Eventually by the year 1954 the Vietnamese had a breakthrough. They finally won and the war, was called the Geneva Accords. Through all the accomplishments, he was just a simple man. Simple mindset and morals were things that made him so great. He especially believed that the young needed a good and proper education. He believed that all children should have the privilege that is being able to participate in a school. Ho Chi Minh through different problems and obstacles led Vietnam to a state of freedom using his simple mentality and his drive for the simple morals of life. (Ho Chi Minh)
Ho Chi Minh caused many problems for the country of Vietnam and took away the power of the people.
Since a young age, he was inspired by his father who protested the French rule to not accept this, and go to any measures even if they were radical to free his country. He believed that in order to do this he needed to have communism would be the type of system, he would have in place. When he moved to France, he started his journey to a communist Vietnam. In France he participated in many radical and extreme events. One of the most famous ones is creating the French Communist party. The goal of this party was to turn France into a communist country, and seize freedom of Vietnam so he could take control. After creating the Indochinese Communist Party, he encouraged people in that group to go get people in Vietnam on their side. The group succeeded and they got people excited, but they did their job to well. When they did this, it inspired people to protest, but these protests turned violent and riots broke out. These radical protests that were inspired by Ho led to the burning of planes. This even led to the death of over 100 Vietnamese citizens. With death and chaos loose in Vietnam, Ho was in serious trouble. He caused many problems and had to be taken into custody. French and British police tracked him down. Ho was hiding in Hong Kong. He served several years in prison for causing this. After he finished serving his sentence he embarked on a journey to Russia. He was inspired by Karl Marx the man who created the idea of communism. Russia had the biggest living evidence of his work. He studied the ideals and the thought process of Vladimir Lenin and Joseph Stalin. He studied there tactics, ethics, and how they ruled with an iron fist. After he had finished studying the work of these two leaders, he returned to Vietnam. By this time the blueprint for WWII was laid out. In order to seize control of land that was owned by Japan, Vietnam agreed to fight with the U.S.
His good action only had a bad influence behind it. Finally after years of fighting, the war was over. He seized control of part of Japan’s land killing thousands of Japanese citizens and soldiers. When Ho took control of Vietnam he also killed thousands of French soldiers. Since the moment, he took control of Vietnam, it was destined to be under communist rule. Ho ruled with an iron fist being strict on rules, gaining a huge army, and blocking out the media completely. This time of ultimate power and peace was ruined when the French came back for a second fight. Ho sent his armies to fight and defend Vietnam. The blood of thousands spilled on the battlefield, but war raged on. Finally the damaged this war had caused was severe. Many were dead, the land was destroyed because of a war, and Vietnam was split into two countries. Ho’s communist views forced people away from his idea of Vietnam. South Vietnam was created for all the people who opposed his ideas and views. North Vietnam was for all the supporters of communism and Ho’s vision. Ho being a man of his qualities could not deal with the fact that he did not have control of all of Vietnam. On November 1, 1955 a 20 year war of great bloodshed and pain started. Ho’s actions caused a whole new war that was even worse than before. This time though it was even worse for two main reasons. The first reason was that he was killing his own people. He had to fight South Vietnam, so he had to kill other Vietnamese in order to win the war. The second reason why this war was so bad is because the lives of U.S. troops were at risk. The U.S. felt that it was the right thing to do to defend the Southern Vietnamese, and help them win the war. By doing this though hundreds of thousands of U.S. troops were killed. Ho Chi Minh’s communist and aggressive mindset ended up causing much inequality and conflict during his rule. (Ho Chi Minh)
Ho Chi Minh’s actions and beliefs ended up getting the U.S. into a war full of conflict and bloodshed. The split of Vietnam was just the beginning of a new war. Ho Chi Minh wanted Vietnam to be one county and so he and North Vietnam declared war on South Vietnam. Lyndon Johnson the president at the time was worried about this. He knew South Vietnam was not strong enough to defend itself and felt like America needed to intervene. He felt that if North Vietnam won then the idea of communism would spread with it. America being a strong democratic country was very oppositional towards communism and its ideas. The moment President Johnson took office he went to work. There was an immediate economical as well as military aid towards South Vietnam. Ho Chi Minh’s actions forced America to sacrifice its money and military for South Vietnam. In 1964 at the Gulf of Token there was an attack on the American destroyers. Vietnam ships had bombed the American destroyers and the U.S. had to take the war to the next level. The U.S. would finally start getting involved as well. They increased the number of troops significantly and they planned airstrikes on Vietnam. As time went on things became even more serious the U.S. had to give up even more of its soldiers to the war. They also were forced to increase the amount of money and artillery they were putting into the war. Again there is a clear example of how Ho’s actions impacted the U.S. greatly. When the U.S. entered the war they were ready to fight. They were more advanced than the vietnamese and this gave them an advantage. They used different chemicals and poisonous gasses to kill them as well as for strategy. In addition to using these chemicals for killing their soldiers they also used it to destroy the North Vietnamese food sources. They did this so they could starve North Vietnam’s soldiers. During the Vietnamese New Year there was also lots of bloodshed. North Vietnam tried to take advantage of everybody celebrating by launching a sneak attack. Although this worked temporarily the U.S. and South Vietnam responded quickly. They launched a counter attack and ultimately this ended up working. The two sides went back and forth causing the bloodshed of many soldiers. While war kept on going on in Vietnam, back in the U.S. things were unsteady. Many U.S. citizens were not happy that they were sacrificing their troops for the Vietnamese. There were protests all over the country saying to bring the boys home and stop fighting another country’s war. This is another time where Ho’s actions have made a huge impact. This time they caused a country to become divided all because of the war he started. Once Nixon took over though he slowly started pulling the U.S. out of the war until they were totally done. Still the price they paid for the war was huge. Nearly 60,00 soldiers were killed and approximately 300,000 were injured. In addition to the loss of soldiers the also lost lots of money. They spent around 200 billion dollars on this war. The war that Ho started affected the U.S. even once the war was done. Ho Chi Minh and the war he created spread worldwide and eventually affected the U.S. by making them lose money and soldiers. (America History of Our Nation)
Ho Chi Minh’s actions had positive impacts and helped create a nation, but also had negative impacts causing the war, destruction, wastage of money, and the U.S. sacrificing what it had to help other people. Ho Chi Minh’s drive to free Vietnam led him to a position of supreme power of the independent Vietnam that he had created. Ho Chi Minh’s communist way of thinking led to a great amount of conflict and cost death, destruction, and the splitting of a country. Ho Chi Minh’s actions dragged the Cold War on and cost the U.S. a lot of money and soldiers. Ho Chi Minh’s good actions formed a new county and government, but the way he wanted to lead under a communist government caused conflict and war, and also caused the U.S. to enter another war.
