Life was good for the select few who worked in the government. Others were forced to endure hard labor from working in mines and on plantations. The Vietnamese were forced off their lands and most had no land of their own(how do you know this?). Many of the Vietnamese people starved because the the vast quantities of food produced were exported to France. (3) The French had no interest in the well- being of the Vietnamese people and only saw value in the profit Vietnamese goods could create for the motherland. The French however, were not willing to commit vast resources to keep Vietnam. The French began to lose control in Vietnam due to their inability to foster non- communist nationalistic growth. When Truman decided to put troops down in Vietnam, he did so without the consent of congress. This set a precedent for future presidents. The US went into Vietnam relatively unprepared, and their entry symbolizes their lack of judgement, understanding of root issues, and a lack of support for their very own beliefs in freedom. While the US was in Vietnam, 3.4 million troops served, 60,000 Americans died, 1.5 (what? million? billion? thousand? hundred) Vietnamese civilians were severely wounded or killed, 6.4 million tons of bombs were dropped, 3.5 million acres of chemical weapons were sprayed, and spent 352 billion dollars which is equivalent of nearly 3 trillion dollars today. This highlights the extent that the US was willing to go to protect their beliefs on an International level, and also shows their commitment to attempting to halt the spread of communism. The containment policy at this point was the center of their concerns. The United States was positive that Minh was an entirely communist leader, but in reality, he was only partly communist. Ho Chi Minh’s communist ideas relied heavily on Confucian concepts.(Like what?) Minh’s supposed revolutionary ethics consisted of humanity, duty, knowledge, courage, and integrity. Minh wanted to implement village culture as peasant families were supposed to be social units involved in agricultural activities. Minh was known not to exclusively be a communist,
