Isadora Duncan pioneered the pathway that for many years lead some of the most influential modern dancers into fame. Leading a life that although today is common, she lived many years ahead of her time. She broke out of the box of societal influence, not because she wanted to but she felt she needed too. Isadora Duncan was one of the first to have shaped what we consider modern dance today.
Born in 1877 and living till 1927 Isadora lead a very provocative lifestyle. She also had many tragic events shape her life. She had her two kids die in a freak auto accident where the car rolled back into a body of water killing them. She herself was flamboyant and exuberant right up until the day she died in an auto accident. She was driving in her car when one of her many scarves she wore got caught in the wheel and she died from neck injury. There wasn’t one specific way to dance or choreograph there was freedom of expression and artistic choice. This gave a choreographer the right to create what they felt needed to be created rather than just to please the audience. She created simple dances with simple gestures and movements that were easily understood by the audience so they could relate to it. She did not feel the need for lavish choreography that showed off every trick she could do; it was about self-expression through movement. Isadora also travelled to many countries all over the world, especially in Europe to perform and spread this new style of dance. She greatly impacted Russia as many of them felt the need for artistic freedom after seeing her dance, which they were not permitted in Russia.
