On 15 February 1942, Singapore fell to the Japanese and in Winston Churchill word was ‘worst disaster and largest capitulation in British history’. This report will discuss why Japan attacked Singapore, what are the main reasons that Japan was successful in their attack on Singapore and how were different individuals and groups of people, including New Zealanders, affected by the fall of Singapore?
Why Did Japan attack Singapore?
Singapore was the largest British base in the Pacific, so by taking it down it knocks the British nearly completely out of the Pacific war. Which makes it so much easier to take the Pacific over without having to worry about the British getting in their way as much.
