After the Sino-Japanese War in 1894, Japan did not let that stop them from becoming a world power. Especially in 1902 with the Anglo-Japanese Alliance, and is also shown in 1904 when Japan declares war with Russia and starts the Russo-Japanese War and ends with The Treaty of Portsmouth. As we enter 1914 we also witness the strength Japan has created over the years leading up to the World War I since Japan was an alliance with the Entente Powers and played a key role in securing the sea lanes in the West Pacific and Indian Oceans against the Imperial German Navy which 20 years earlier seized the Shandong Peninsula. This gave Japan the opportunity to expand its influence into Asia even further by Japan issuing the “Twenty-one Demands” to China for commercial privileges in Manchuria and was able to do this by demanding German colonial territory in China when its demands were ignored Japan declared war on Germany.
