Japan – China , Their Modernization and the comparison
China and Japan both came under pressure from the West in the 19th century. The West wanted to open up foreign trade and relations, during this period in time neither Japan or China had the means to stand up against the West. This due to the fact that both the United states of America and Europe went through an industrial revolution, hence they had superior technology and weaponry for this time period. Japan and China basically had no option, but to succumb to the west and sign unfavorable treaties that forced them to open up to western merchants.
Yet the outcomes of these 2 countries in the 19th century were completely different.
China

While Japan abolished their traditional structure for the modern structure , China kept theirs and implemented the western innovations where they saw it fit. Resulting in small scale western innovation, compared to Japan. Japan studied the about the West and read their works, while China stayed with orthodox text, which left China with a lot of prejudices about the West and Japan with a lot of facts about the West.
The quick adaption and implantation of western innovation was partly due to the overthrown shogun ate and their new young and ambitious elite , willing to reform Japan in order to become a world power. While China was lagging behind in modernizing as a result of their ignorance to western innovation and reforms. (Fairbank and Reischauer, 1989, p.271)
China failed to become an industrialized power and modernize, while Japan managed to become one.
