The day before it hit, the mayor issued the city’s first-ever mandatory evacuation order and he declared that the superdome would serve as a shelter for last resort (Hurricane, n.d.). Some of the people from New Orleans had moved to northern Louisiana and other parts of the United States to escape the hurricane before it hit. The night before the storm about 80 percent of the city’s population evacuated (Hurricane, n.d.). Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans early in the morning on August, 29, 2005.
When it reached land, it had a Category 3 rating on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale. It did a great deal of damage, but it’s aftermath was worse. Levee breached led to massive flooding and people who were affected slowly got rescued (Hurricane, n.d.). Many people were moved from their homes. Katrina caused more than $100 billion in damage. Hurricane Katrina affected many people. The Coast Guardsmen saved more than 33.500 people. An estimated amount of 1,833 people was killed. Eight years after Hurricane Katrina hit, New Orleans was resurrected. Over 204,000 homes were destroyed. Today, people are still shocked by Hurricane Katrina. Most people say that New Orleans look like a ghost town. Hurricane Katrina was one of the worst natural disasters to ever hit the city of New Orleans, but one of the deadliest to ever hit the United States. It changed many people's lives. There are still places in New Orleans that haven’t been restored. Hurricane Katrina is most likely a hurricane that people will not
forget.
