Joe “King” Oliver was one of the most famous persons during the 1900s. Oliver beginnings were in New Orleans by the 1908 and after that he worked with different groups as in Source 7 says “Worked in Kid Ory’s band in 1917,...played in Bill Johnson's Creole Orchestra… The original Creole Orchestra at the Dreamland Ballroom”(Source 7-1). He had the opportunity of playing in different places, with different people. He also was “very famous for his using mutes, derbies, bottles….. sound out of his horn with this arsenal of gizmos” (Source 7-1). Joe Louis is one of the greatest boxers in history. He became the world heavyweight champion in 1937. He held it until 1949; holding it longer than anyone in history ever has. He came from rags and riches, which helped influence the type of person and athlete he grew to be. He was also a great inspiration to both white and black people all over the world at a very critical time in our nation’s history.…
Thankfully, Louis was born in a city with one of the largest entertainment industries in America. New Orleans had thousands of tourists regularly, coming for fun and staying for music. Even though Armstrong was banned from many places because of his color, he did have the ability to listen to music. As tough as New Orleans was it had one thing in abundance: music. In Louis’s area music was everywhere. The city was filled with dance halls, bands in the “tonks”, and bands parading around in the streets. “Louis could not escape the sound of music. He heard it as he dozed off in his bed at night and he heard it coming out of the “tonks” when he woke up in the morning. He heard it in school during the day when bands marched by outside” (Collier, 9). This constant exposure and growing music sparked something in Louis leading him to his love of jazz and ragtime. Starting at age sixteen Louis would stop in at bars called “tonks” and watch the dancers and listen to the bands play. “He loved it all, and yet it was painful, too, because he yearned to be up there with the musicians, playing the blues and ragtime” (Collier, 40). In one of Armstrong’s favorite tonks, Louis eventually met his mentor Joe “King” Oliver who saw something unique in Armstrong and in 1922 invited him to join a trip to Chicago with his band. At the time Oliver’s band was the best and most influential in all of…
In the 1920s, the introduction of electric lighting made dancing late into the night easier. It also influenced that the clothing of the Victorian era was over, and that the new style was quite free and flowing. Dances were created due to contests where people made up their own dances. Most dances were invented in the 1920. The Charleston was one of the first. It was popular from its feature on two Broadway shows in 1922. Next, came the Black Bottom, which was the most popular from 1926 to 1927. In 1927, the Lindy Hop became popular. The Lindy Hop eventually became Swing dance. The places where they danced were called dance halls or night clubs, which had live music playing for the dancers.…
A decade may sound like a short time, but in reality, many things could happen in just that one decade. One decade can totally change what happens and make a 180 degree turn of what was happening. In the 1920s, World War 1 has just ended and soldiers were coming back from many casualties. From America being stuck in war, they were finally able to celebrate. A dramatic change had begun and the cultural structure had completely changed. A great economic growth was able to happen because of consumer goods, and this swept up America into a completely different society. From being reserved and rural, people became urbanized. Throughout the 1920s, cultural factors like the Jazz Age, Flappers, and the jazz music was what made Americans flourish and…
This growing divisiveness amongst Americans in today’s comes as a result of a backlash against the liberals and the liberal ideals of the past few decades following Ronald Reagan’s presidency. With standards placed on societal norms and values in the recent past by political beliefs of the left, which held a strong influence on the American people, it would appear that people now, similar to the 1920s era, are again trying to break these norms as they begin to think and act for themselves. For example, as cited in the article, statues of former heroes and heroines were scrutinized by many American, as a result of their “wrongdoings,” despite all the actions and risks they took to shape America and the way it is today. It is those people who…
The family is remembered by a foundation named after them that takes donated instruments and puts them in the hands of a eager child. The first person to instruct Louis on how to play the trumpet was Peter Davis. Louis first played in a band for New Orleans home for colored waifs. Peter Davis use to visit the home when the administrator called him he was responsible for disciplining and teaching young louis. Davis made louis the leader of the Home Band and they played all around New Orleans which was the start up of Armstrong's music career around the age of thirteen. Armstrong was released from the house at the age of 14 Where he went to live with his father but bounced around from house to house then back to the temptations of the streets. The incident that had got him in the home was when he shot a pistol in the air at a parade. The pistol was his fathers. His first dance hall job was at Henry pounce where Black Benny became his protector. Louis played at brass band parades and listened to the older artists like Bunk Johnson, Buddy petit, Kid Ory, and a person who acted as a father figure Joe "King" Oliver. Louis began playing with a band called Fate Marable that played on a steamboat up and down the Mississippi River. Louis Armstrong was one of the most influential artists in the history of music.…
There were many important events that happened in United States during the 1600-1920. If I have to pick five most significant events that happened, I would pick: declaration of Independence, Louisiana Purchase, civil war, WWI, and the 19th Amendment. The reason I pick these events is because I believe, through these events, United States became one of the most powerful nations of today’s world. Without them, United Sates may not have the same accomplishment that they do now. Declaration of Independence happened in 1776, and this made United Sates become a free nation and its own country.…
In every era of American history, the population looks towards leaders of the free world and their politicians for much of the guidance and answers that they seek. But often times the lesser influences of “pop culture icons” are often overlooked. When the general masses idolized a single event, trend, or person so much, the latter can have an impact on social trends with enduring and meaningful significance. Often times a prominent musician, for example, has the power to sway the masses, and create social movements that encourage positive (or even sometimes negative) change that encompass a surrounding society. Through his Americana lyrics, and strong embrace of the American dream and spirit, Woody Guthrie has achieved a cultural and iconic status in the American landscape.…
The most important development of the 1920s, in my opinion, is the technology and cultural changes. Through the 1920s, there were many changing that impact on the American society and lifestyle. The most important development was the radio. It helped to create the new mass culture in the United States. The radio became a dominant fixture of many American households in the 1920s.…
1920s, The Influential Time Period (easybib) Milava Shumilova What made the 1920s such an influential time period? Because women started living on their own as well as getting the right to vote, immigration began, tariffs began to rise, the stock market collapsing caused the onset of the great depression, and cars were being made as long as roads and bridges. Women were denied key rights that were enjoyed by men, women who were married weren’t allowed to own their own land, and were expected to do housework, and be a mother.…
The First World War was a war that represented the cultural changes that would take place directly following it. It was a war of new weaponry and new ways of communication. However, much like the new era of culture in the 1920’s, it came to a standstill; stuck in the trenches of some far off land.…
Louis Armstrong has always had a love for music. He attended Fisk School for Boys, where he had exposure to music. Although he dropped out of school at the age of eleven, he didn’t end his musical career. Armstrong preformed with many musicians including, Joe “King” Oliver, who acted as a father figure and mentor for the young inspiring musician. Eventually, Joe “King” Oliver soon became upset with the fact that Armstrong began to over play him during many of their performances.…
Many people probably wouldn't have made it through the 1930's without music. The people who listened to the music said it was their way of life (Microsoft music). Music helped people forget about all the bad and horrible things going on around them, it let them escape their day to day troubles if just for a little while. The kind of music most people listened to was the high beat "Swing".…
