(X 186-187). Malcolm and his followers developed techniques for attracting African Americans from black nationalist rallies that advocated for a return to Africa and African roots. (X 219-223). Exposed to more radical ideas, Malcolm became more critical of other African American civil rights leaders, calling them “integration-mad Negroes” and “Uncle Toms.” (X 248-249) At first, Elijah Muhammad, the leader of the Nation of Islam, discouraged any discreditation of other black civil rights leaders, but when attacks on the Nation of Islam became recurrent, he allowed Malcolm express his feelings to the public. By 1960, the Nation of Islam was holding large rallies with Muhammad as the ringmaster. At first the Nation of Islam admitted no whites to these rallies, but they eventually admitted the anyone with curiosity. (X
