and hiding his Jewish blood. He created his new name, Man ray by combining his childhood nickname Many and Last name. He was really satisfied with his new name, so Ray did not use his last name anymore. Man Ray was studied architecture first, and became a painter after entered an art school in 1909. He was received Surrealism and Dadaism by Marcel Duchamp, and Francis Picabia. In 1921 after Man Ray moving to Paris, he seriously knuckle down to work as Dadaist. But soon after 1924, he participated to Surrealist movement. At this moment, he started to have an interesting about the modeling of light by photography, and invented the Rayograph, one of the new photo shoot technique: This photograph technique does not need to use real lens, and just put the subject directly on photographic paper with flashing light for getting the abstract images. Man Ray named this unique photo technique as Rayograph and rewrite history of photography. This is the almost same technique with Laszlo Moholy-Nagy Photogram, and well noted truth that Man Ray and Moholy-Nagy explored this new principles of space and movement by the picture together. As I mentioned before, actually Man ray was trained his painting skills in New York firstly, and started his life as a painter. His early art works are Cubist paintings such as having a similar style with Pablo Picasso. He deconstructed three-dimensional figure and expressed it as masses of color with a clear outline. Man Ray gave a private in 1915, and showed some of abstract works and Cubist landscape. Because he first photographed photographs of his paintings, this exhibition is important in his career as a photographer. He began to experiment creatively with a variety of possibilities that he could use to express himself. Ray, who came to Paris in 1921, became one of the most original photographer of the time.
He participated in the Surrealism movement, furthermore, Ray expanded his artist area by creating works of various fields such as pictures, painting, and sculpture. Among them, the publicity and fashion photos of the advertisement brought the fame to Ray. He created a new image by cutting picture of a uniquely angle of female model, and also took pictures of celebrities. However, after World War II, Ray went back to America and continued to take picture of fashion. Came back to Paris in 1951, Ray continued to succeed until he …show more content…
died. Then, what is Rayograph which created Man Ray as a master of photographer and famous artist? Rayograph is the technique what is basely invented by lots of photo experiments in darkroom. Man Ray put randomly selected objects onto the white paper, exposing it to light and then developed it. Although it was not the first time to invent a picture of a camera without a camera as ‘Photogram’, this Man Ray’s technique was very unique. By moving objects and light sources, or bending light into objects made of glass, he produced a more dynamic image, not only in black and white, but also in various tones. Ray also explored new techniques such as Solarization, Negative print, Sandwich montage, and Double exposure. Solarization is one of the special features of the photo. If exposure is provided to photosensitive materials such as film or print sheets, the maximum concentration is decreased by the phenomenon, causing a partial reversal of the light part. This photography technique has a kind of relief effect, especially with a strong contour line on figure. And the degree of Solarization depends on the film used, the photographic paper, and the phenomenon. And Negative print is a contrast light technique. Positive film like slides could create a negative image with direct exposure, and a negative film could be used to make a positive condition by reconnecting it to the film. The negative picture of the negative light is dark, quaint, grotesque negative voice feeling, it is used extensively to express the mysterious atmosphere in a deliberate manner. Montage sandwich and double exposure are the technique that sandwich printing or multiple exposure to produce montage. Specifically, providing double exposures on the same photographic material at the photo shoots; double exposure without having to refresh or transmit film without rewriting sensitive materials. Among his relevant and famous art photograph, the one of the best one is Ingre’s Violin produced by 1924. The picture of black and white is a classic wind, and at a glance, you can see the sensual beauty of the nude model. The lines that dome down on the neck and shoulder make viewers to feel the complete beauty of the human body with the simple, elegant shape of the body. However, the shape of the beautiful woman’s body and the shape of the violin are superimposed by the front hole of the violin. The image of the violin and the model is surprisingly shaped as an image. The method of expression is concise and subtle. In psychological magnification, music and human body are converging to a new beauty and lead us to new heights of beauty. The model behind the bare back is French star KiKi. Man Ray enjoyed to employee celebrities and models for his photo art work. As an instance, In 1934 October, Ray published Photographs by Man Ray 1920 Paris 1934. In this photo book, there are lots of portraits of artists and celebrities in that time; “His portraits of subjects including Georges Braque, Salvador Dali, James Joyce, Pablo Picasso, Tristan Tzara and unnamed studies of female subjects including Jacqueline Goddard, Kiki, Joella Levy, Suzy Solidor and Lee miller” (195). Among these people, I mostly wanna focus to describe one female model, Lee miller. Lee miller is Man Ray’s last lover, muse, model, influencer, assistor, and also photo artist who has a career like him. She is also one of the famous photo artist as Ray. Lee Miller is a woman who was born in New York and started her job as model when she was 19. After some time, she also became a cover model of Vogue. Miller is really attractive and passionate woman. Shortly after she rocketed to success as model, Edward Steichen who is one of photographer selected her as his one of the muse or favorite model. “Steichen took her under his wing, and when Steichen suggested that she might try becoming a photographer herself, the stage was set for her launch into Man Ray’s studio” (Prodger 27). In 1929, a young and beautiful model, Miller visited the Man Ray’s studio in Paris for becoming a real photographer and student of him. She grows up as a photographer while working as a model and assistant manager. In 1932, Miller outed Ray’s studio as a photo assistance and opened her own studio. In fact, there was some problem and happening between Miller and Ray before. They are lived together for two years, and Ray wanted for her to live as his wife, married or not. However, Miller did not want to maintain their relation like that. Thus, they were breaking up their love and their romance was end. When she and he worked together in Ray’s studio, “she came into her own as an artist, and he made significant advances in his own work” (Prodger 29). Many of the best cloned photographs of Ray were created by Miller’s aids. They enjoyed to create Surrealist photographs with Surrealists. During this period, Ray made fun of himself, Miller, and two surrealism friends photo. As a prime example, La Priere (The Prayer) photographed by Ray in 1930. “This famous photograph is often assumed to be a depiction of Miller, but analysis of the surrounding negatives, which show another, unnamed model in a variety of poses, proves it was not. According to Miller, she was, however, present at the creation of the iconic picture, and assisted Ray to photograph the model in the now familiar pose” (Prodger 34). After she broke up with Ray and opened her studio in New York, she had very positive reaction to the end of her relation contrary to Ray. She felt liberty and free to find new arenas in that place. “Stylistically, her later work - particularly in the New York portrait studio she set up before the war - owes much to her experience with Ray, but in terms of subject matter she rarely referenced him” (Prodger 30). After a while, Miller even also married a businessman who was born in Egypt. Miller went to Cairo for continue working on her own photos. In this case, we might think her relationship with Ray is over, they are reconciled after 10 years for being each one’s partner for shape their work, not lover. In 1942, when she was 35, Miller received military I.D. that recognizes her as war correspondent from American war, and she became the only female war photographer in Europe during World War II. Miller’s picture taken in the war were assimilated with the surreal American consciousness of the 1930s, and showed the climax of her photography career. However, “disturbed by her experience as a photographer on the front lines of World War II, Miller fell into increasingly debilitating depression, and by 1953 she had effectively given up professional photography, although she continued to make pictures of family and friends” (Prodger 29). However, Man Ray suffered his time for missing her, but struggled to maintain his work and professional motivation.
So, soon after Ray breaking up with Miller, Ray created one of the most recognizable work Object indestructible which remade in 1933 by 1923’s Object of Destruction. He used and copied Miller’s eyes for model of eyes. Through Ray’s legendary instructions: “Cut out the eye from a photograph of one who has been loved but is seen no more. Attach the eye to the pendulum of a metronome and regulate the weight to suit the tempo desired. Keep going to the limit of endurance. With a hammer well-aimed, try to destroy the whole at a single blow” (Prodger 42). The destruction showing in this work means to aid exorcise some of the memory of last love. He lost his love, but he acquired his great
work. Conclusively, Man Ray was a living legend photographer while he was alive. He got a success quickly, and invented and showed lots of new art for us not only his each diverse areas of artworks, furthermore, innovative unique techniques and skills in photography like Rayograph and Solarization. He is really an original artist and lovable man. Ray created and explored countless things in art world during his lifetime. Man Ray always did not to take up the Camera as a only means for taking a photo. He is the real artist who loved art and create his own unique work.
