Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.: A Drum Major for Justice
During the civil rights era, numerous activist for equal rights emerged from the depths of oppression, ready to take back what was rightfully theirs, equality and human rights. Among those, one of the most renowned and influential activist for civil rights was Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He sought after justice through, what he is universally known for, nonviolence. “The Poor Peoples Campaign” aimed to help poor people get jobs, health care and proper housing. They planned to unite poor people from all corners of the nation and have a peaceful march in Washington, but before this could be conducted Martin Luther King was assassinated while protesting in Memphis, Tennessee, with hopes of helping sanitation workers in Memphis Tennessee be successful with their strike in demanding better pay and work conditions. Even after his passing the Poor Peoples Campaign were continued by SCLC leader and king’s personal friend, Ralph Abernathy, his wife Coretta Scott King. As time passes by his name will never fade into a dark abyss of forgotten heroes, and his voice and actions will forever be cherished by the world.
