Martin Luther King Jr was a great man who fought for the rights for black people to be treated equivalent to whites.
This social activist for equality once said “I have a dream that one day on the hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit together at the table of brotherhood.” When I think of this great man’s words I take them to mean that person’s of different races, black and white, will be seen as equals. According to the History Learning Site, King started his work in 1955 with the Montgomery Bus Boycott rallying for equal rights. King’s long struggle led to his demise in 1968. Here in the Bahamas there is inequality nationality, gender and
disability.
Here in The Bahamas nationalities are look at inferior beings similar the how the “blacks” were seen during Martin Luther Jr times. For examples the Haitians migrate to our country for a better way of life and are sometimes discriminated against because of their nationality. Next we have gender inequality. Women are not treated equivalent to men in our country. “The most striking instance of inequality in our constitution is that between men and women in relation to their ability to pass on Bahamian citizenship”, hence men that has children with foreign women can pass on the nationality to their children and this same policy do not apply for women. Lastly, disability. There are hardly any accommodations made for disabilities. When we look transportation, the workplaces, education system and society at large person with disabilities are not treat equally.
If we take a survey to find out how many people in the Bahamas know the rights that are entitled to as a human being it would be discovered that only a small percentage of persons would know one or two of the Human Rights laws that exist. I myself was unfamiliar with the existence of any such rights until the discussion of this essay. Therefore it is quite evident that there is a greater demand for these rights to be known by all human being within our country. The ministry of education mission is “to provide all persons in The Bahamas an opportunity to receive an education that will equip them with the necessary knowledge, skills, beliefs and attitudes required for work and life in a democratic society, guided by Christian values.” Therefore the humans rights should made a part of the curriculum as it will help in disturbing the needed knowledge about what rights each person is entitled to. Another method that is far reaching to a greater number of persons is media. I would create a group and these persons would go into the schools and work places to inform the people about there rights. These are some of the more effected way that would inform the people on the knowledge of human rights.
Even after years of fighting for equality and enactment there are still a vast number of persons who still don’t know there privilege to as a human being.
