In 1517, the Protestant Reformation began. It was a revlot againt the Roman Catholic Church, the reformation bought into questioning the reglious pratics of the chruch and the corruption. In the reformation question the use of images in the Cathic chruch. The question was were you worshiping the image or what the image repsent. In respond to the Protestant Reformation, a serise of meeting were held in 1545-1563 by the Cathic cruch called Council of Trent. In these meeting they adressees the issueses that were being faced do to the reformation. One of the issueses was iconergoloy in the church. They bvelieved in the omporantc of holy images in the church. Holy images were believe to help relate the srciure to the people. Paintings of holy saints and sences from the bible could create a emotinal concetion that went past words.
In respounds to these meetings we see more painting that reinforce the catholic ideals. Like the dipction of the saints, the Virgin and Christ.
Different are movements were created following the reformation. One art movent that took off was the Baroque Art. It was very dramctic, using light and dark elements to convay emotion to the viewer.
The painting “Lady of Our Sorrows” has a very dramtic look to it. You can see the suffering on Mary’s face, you feel a bit of sympathy towards her. This style of painting know as Realism was very popular in New Spain at the time. Realsim was use in painting holy images because it help make an contcet between the image and the viewer. Some people couldnt read but could understud an image. The CAtholic Church knew the power of images, this is way they had representation of holy figures and saints. images could invocl an emotion that words couldnt do.
This idea of using this art style to help relate an emotian to the sepcatator was a very popular idea in New Spain. The practice of using images to help people understand what was being peach or told to them dates back to the first missionaries.
People could easiely relate to the image because of the realisct charcarist of the painting style. New Spain became know for its artist gilds. There where gilds known for the poloychorn scultos and paintings in the europen styles. In Mexico city paintings were very populur with the population of that time. There was a gild in Mexcio city that was know for it europen style of painting.

In New Spain their were many different virsons of the virgin. SHe was a very poplur holy figuer in the cathcl reglion but in New Spain she was even more popluer among the people. There are many reasons why she is so poplur.
People could easy relate to her suffings and she was a mother. There were also many sighting of the Virgin in the New World which increase her populairty. This may be why there are so many images and painting done of the virgin in the New Spain. Many people wanted there own image of the Holy Mother to have.
Because the Virgin and the realsist painting style was s populr there was an increase for these images. In Northen New Spain, the eorppon style was highly favroed among the high socity and the church. Local Cirlo adopdted this style and made it there
own.
A very populr art style in New Spain at he time was Baroque. In New Spain it was called Chiaroscuro, the local artist of the time took the eurpoen Baroque and experimented with it. They created a since of drama and tension between the image and the viewer. Using technical that were custom of the art movement, for example tenebrism and chiaroscuro. These technices use light and dark vaules to create dramatic contrats which made a emotinal feel to the painting.
