The attack on Pearl Harbor began as part of Japan's larger plan to conquer Southeast Asia. The Japanese wanted to do this to secure raw materials and other natural resources that they lacked. Since America supplied more than half of Japan's supply of these materials Japan was reluctant to push the United States too far, but they also had intentions of getting control of its own sources of raw materials. 1941. The attack took place on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. Because of this morning 2,403 people lost their lives. Among these people were husbands, wives, fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters and friends to many people. Of these 2,403, there were 2,335 which were servicemen and 68 were civilians. In addition a bomb that hit the U.S.S. Arizona killed 1,177 servicemen. Others that suffered injuries were numbered at 1,178. In memory of all those that lost their lives there is a memorial above the sunken remains of the Arizona. Many more lives were killed as America entered World War II. By the end of World War II, 104,985 American sailors and marines were wounded and 56,683 were killed. The Americans reacted immediately and quickly with a great program and a heavy recruiting effort.
The whole complex of American lifestyle had changed immediately. Those who were not preparing to enter the military found other endeavors to support the war effort. Many became engaged in selling war bonds to provide funds for the government to pay for the war. Many folks found jobs working in war factories, some nearby at home and others moving away to other areas where war plants were already in operation and were looking for manpower to work there.

The Pearl Harbor Attack in Hawaii brought an enormous effect on not only the American society, but also on the Japanese people lived in the US. That effect have continued for many decades toward the younger generations. As a result of Pearl Harbor, the whole society was likeminded in regards to entering the war. Sixteen millions men and women joined the military to fight for the US. "It took the dramatic event of the attack on Pearl Harbor to shift public opinion overwhelmingly to support our entry into the war"(Denson, 2006. P.14). Entire society came together for common sense. The division in the US that had been present as results of the civil war was now forgotten. To support the war economy, women were also taking men's role in the society as teachers, doctors and part of the government. Women also worked in the factories for production of weapons. Even the youngest citizens helped, school children help coin drives where they collected coins to buy war bonds to support the government. Citizens of the US were doing everything what they managed, to support their country at this critical
time.
To sum up, Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor which will be remembered as a day of infamy, changed the US foreign policy for World War II. The US-Japan relations became hostile from alliance. The bomb attack caused an enormous intervention of the US in World War II because the attack influenced American society. The attack created a shift in public opinion and war supporters increased within the US society. Also there were another impacts which changed the American society's mind. Even the government started war propagandas with media, newspapers, war bonds and famous people in order to effect public opinion. So, enormous support from the public was created for the US war policy and the US involved into war as a protector of democracy.
